If you're a Peugeot fan:

And finally, a '50s PX-10 frame!

http://tinyurl.com/f429u

I want all of them.

mswantak 04-11-06 11:19 PM

Well dammit; that 5-speed town bike's got the fenders and rack I need for my UE-8.

Nice Bianchi vintage a bit newer than I'd prefer but still I wouldn't turn
down a Super Leggera

This looks decent. I have a friend who wants a bicycle but doesn't want to spend much, so I may have to check it out for her.

Pair of 1960's cinelli bikes, super record strada and pista

What is going on? I've seen this pair of bikes listed on eBay a couple of times now. $500 for the pair, 2 hours left.

1. 1965 Model Special Corsa, SN 1627. 59.5 cm C to C seat tube. Candy apple red and chrome....
2. 1963 Cinelli mod S.C., SN 8541. 54.5 cm C to C seat tube. Candy apple red and chrome....

I wish I had the money/time/space.

Look up eBay item #7234504329

If you're near pasadena and see these in person I'll gladly pay for the track bike if you want to buy the road bike and split the diff. name your price!

luker 04-14-06 11:34 AM

man, its all upside down. The item is listed as being in Pasadena, the guy wants to be paid in AU, the name on the account looks to me to be "Eric or Mara" and some guy named Jason Osburn wants you to email him before bidding, you have seen it before, it is a private listing, and most of all, either of those bikes ought to be commanding five times what the current bid is set at. If it looks to good to be true...

This'd probably be a case of a hijacked eBay account, and a hijacked eBay listing. The seller will want you (privately) to pay him through a wire transfer because his "eBay account is temporarily over extended" or something like that.

40x14 04-14-06 11:49 AM

Usually with a hijacked account the hijacker will post more than one item for sale in order to cash in.

The fact that the item is listed in AU often means that the seller registered at eBay.com.au (registered on May-21-02). The seller's purchasing history shows mostly cosmetics, handbags, and other girly stuff.

My guess is that the original buyer is having a change of heart and now wants to unload. Maybe just wishful thinking though.

That said, I wouldn't buy them without seeing them in person, but that doesn't mean they're not for real. Too bad I'm in NYC. I don't seem to recall the dented top-tube in the description the first time around but I do remember that it was in Cali. Do you remember how much they sold for the first time, if they sold at all?

I would defintely not pay anyone I don't know personally with any sort of wire transfer, ever.

Woa, I just realized that this is listed as a 1-day listing. You're probably right.

Done.

Now, go sit on the curb by your house, and wait for the delivery truck. Do not - I repeat - DO NOT move from that spot until the truck arrives with your pretty new bike.

I'd post a reply, but I'm out sitting on the curb.

When did you get a Blackberry?

mswantak 04-14-06 03:22 PM

I didn't; I got a strawberry from sitting down on the curb too hard.

Who is William Sampson?

The seller wants to know, too.

Nice frame. Nice parts.

Go here and search Sampson. Nearly 200 references to a San Diego frame builder.

luker 04-15-06 10:32 PM

I rooted through most of those, and they mostly refer to Sampson bicycle components. This is the germane one:

"...William Sampson was out of San Jose. Started building while attending San
Jose State and was in '73 a founder of the cycling club there; I was
recruited as a member. He was a great guy but, a horrible mechanic and a
worse framebuilder. His career took a nose dive when a cold brazed Sampson
frame came apart in a sprint at our local Velodrome. The rider crashed. I
inspected the pieces..a great learning experience for me. Small community
in the early '70's. Any frames sold after that were out of the area or to
newbies because of a cycle mag article(early Bicycling?) profiling builders
that submitted resumes. The "Custom Bicycle" must have used that article as
a source...

I don't think I'll be bidding...

Some observations. That is the post that caught my attention also. But what I also noticed was the lack of anyone on the CR list chiming in with "I remember that" or similar. Considering the depth of knowledge on the CR list, I find it a bit unusual. All we have is unsupported anecdotal evidence of Sampson's frame building capabilities. On the other hand, we have a frame purported to be one of his and has survived to 2006. I also cannot find any reference to Sampson in "Custom Bicycle" to which the CR poster referred.

With any used bicycle, it is caveat emptor.

luker 04-16-06 08:28 AM

Oddly, I have "The Custom Bicycle" and can't find any reference to this frame builder in it. Not that hard to envision one failure ruining a guy's business...

For the Raleigh fans (Cudak888, I saw stainless rims and chaincases and I thought of you), here's a pile of Raleigh frames and parts... and it's only a short swim :).
