Weinmann alloy 27" rims...which bikes had them?
I've been trying to track down a pair of these Weinmann rims for a while, and I figured it would probably help my various parts suppliers if I could identify what bike (or bikes) they were available on - most of the time, they don't know what I'm looking for unless I can connect it to the specific bike it's from.
The rims are Belgium-made Weinmann clinchers, 27", aluminum w/hooked bead. See pic.
Problem is, I have three of them (laced to their original hubs), and I have no idea as to what they came off of.
One wheel is a front with a high flange Schwinn Approved hub dated 82. I have my suspects as to this rim originating from a Schwinn World Sport, but I have no way to confirm.
The other two appear to be a matching set, low-flange Mallard hub in front, Mallard Helicomatic 6 in the rear. They were loose when I got them, but they fit nicely on my '83 LeTour Luxe.
Can anyone identify a particular make/model that used these rims? Obviously, Schwinn used them back in '82 - on which model, I have no idea. Any insights?
Take care,
-Kurt

I've had a bunch of Weinmann rims which look pretty similar to the ones in your photo with the squared off shoulder, but non of them had hooked beads. Mine were probably older versions. Even the newer(early-mid seventies) Weinmanns which had a smoother profile to them(find them on Super Sports/Sports Tourers) didn't have hooked beads. It will be interesting if we are able to determine when the hooked bead versions started.

By any chance, do the Mallard hubs have a date stamp?

The small-flange front Mallard hub is dated 11-85...
...and the rear Helicomatic is dated 20-83.
Sure, month #20 of 1983! Wonder what happened there. Also looks like my rim set, while both Mallard hubs, are not an original pair.
Either way, it looks like the hooked-bead Weinmanns came sometime around (or possibly before) 1982. There's no denying the originality of the hubs though, for the overall condition of the wheelsets appear to be pretty much equally weathered.
Take care,
-Kurt

All three of the wheels came to me from a local bicycle-chopper builder, Keith Moss.
The third wheel with the '82 Schwinn hub is out of true (if not bent), and is not mounted on anything.

cudak888 Are you looking for a pair of 27" Weinmann wheels like the set on ebay that is expiring at 18 hours from now?

The ones you are looking at are those cursed concave thingamabobs...and I don't think I can lace 36 spokes into a rim drilled with 48 holes (and I'm not about to pull one of those monkey-wrench stunts on one of my machines).
...and I don't cotton to the extra shipping costs for a pair of hubs I don't want. I'll be re-spoking them with stainless spokes and a Sturmey alloy shell FW 4-speed hub for my Raleigh Sports Tourer project.
Take care,
-Kurt

I got them on a '78 Moto Gran Jubile. I think Malliard hubs but have to look, I swapped for 700C anfd they're in the attic.

Looks like I picked out some damn good vintage rims - if you can find them on a Moto Gran Jubilee!

I'll poke my head up there and look tomorrow. The hurricanes last year "forced" me to redo my attic over the garage and it's much more accessible now, though very cluttered.
The 78 Gran Jubile is a nice ride and satisfied an unfulfilled desire from nearly 30 years ago but, to be honest, the bikes had lost some of their pedigree by then. The 531 frame was replaced by Vitus 888 and the Campy/Stronglight drivetrain had morphed into Suntour/Sugino. Of course those worked as well if not better than the Euro parts but the panache was gone...

I'd go with the traditional Campy before I'd bother with the Japanese stuff, but I must say that I am quite impressed with the Super Vitus 980 tubeset - I have a '83 Peugeot PSV10 frameset equipped with it, and it has to be the lightest steel frame I've handled...and that's with the BB installed. Can't wait to stick a pair of wheels under it (I've got that covered) to take it out for a spin.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm curious about the folks who replied that they had these rims on their early seventies Super Sports. I've parted out probably ten of these and I've never found hooked bead rims on any of them. Always Weinmanns, but never hooked beads. So.... I'm curious, are those really hooked bead rims on your early seventies Super Sports?

I think my 78 Raleigh Competition GS has them. I'll have to go look; they may be 700c not 27's.
