I just bought a Centurion (Le Mans RS) last weekend at a local non-profit bicycle organization/shop that also tunes/rehabs-then sells donated bikes. Not knowing anything about Centurions before before my purchase, I was told a little bit of the history (discontinued/changed name to Diamondback) it was a solid road bike, etc. Being quite taken with it, I snagged it up -- but not knowing what year or much else about it, I went home and promptly researched my new bike to find out more.
Among my other search results I found the very informative sheldonbrown website, and this great thread! I've learned a ton from reading the various posts, but I still have no clue what year it is from. I can't seem to find any other models that match mine specifically. My Le Mans RS seems to have quite a few components that most Lemans RS don't have. For instance, it's a 12 speed and has the Shimano 105 groupset. From what I've learned/gathered, that doesn't seem to be standard or common for any Lemans (correct me if I'm wrong). Perhaps mine has been upgraded? Here are my specs:

1987 Centurion Lemans RS, only year that had the yellow and black, which tends to bring the best prices.
Original equipment was actually 2x7 Shimano Light Action, with Exage crankset, calipers, and hubs, laced to box section Araya bronzed rims.
The 2x8 105 stuff is an upgrade by about 4-5 years, the STI shifters and that 105 stuff is very nice, very reliable.
Now, if the wheelset is a 6-sp, it shouldn't work too well. However, if that's really a 7-sp rear freewheel, the 8-sp shifters will work fine with a "dummy shift."
Right now, an STI-equipped bike, even a 2x7, should bring $250-$300. A Centurion, to some folks, will bring more if it's a Tange 1 Ironman or a Tange 2 Lemans RS.
I've sunk about $450 or more into one of those, and could probably sell it for $450 to people who know me, know it will be ready to ride.
The bike is fine right now, if that's a 7-sp rear freewheel. The possibilities are pretty amazing, as you can simply swap in a modern wheelset with an 8-sp cassette and drop some weight, gain a little range, if you so desire.

Welcome to the forum.

How do I know if it's a 6, 7 or 8-sp freewheel/shifter/whatnot? (I'm still new to a lot the bicycle terminology -so not sure what that is!)
I paid $250 for it. Considering it was thoroughly checked over by a mechanic, and any fixes, tune-ups or parts replacements needed were made before selling it, I felt okay paying that. But after researching it I was concerned maybe I paid too much since the Lemans weren't the best model of the Centurion line (and mine -although allover in good shape- does have lots of scratches on it when looking closely). But from your helpful info, it sounds that with the upgrades done to mine, I got a reasonable deal?

151 miles on the Ironman in ~9.5 hours was GREAT. First day felt harder (83mi) even though it was almost all flat. Today gave us some tailwinds (and massive headwinds on some sections) and I was hammering it at 21 mph most of the time, and even 24+ for good stretches. I kinda left my friends behind after lunch break today for the last 31 miles =X But I just felt so good.....steel is real, man. Although sadly, I had to look hard to find any vintage steel, but I did see a few pretty ones (Tommasini, Eddy Merckx, Colnago, Independent Fabrication [not vintage, but gotta appreciate the custom handmade steel bikes!], and other common brands) and took pictures of them all =P
Funny/sad story: There was this kid, probably not even a teen yet. He was with his dad and walking an '89 Ironman Expert (~50cm maybe, with that dark bluish fade) with Suntour GPX on there. I told him "I dig the Ironman! I ride one myself" His response? He complained that it was so heavy......*sigh*
My friend picked up a black and yellow '87 Lemans RS today for his first road bike! It's exciting. And a coincidence that there's so much information on it in these last few posts =D

Ironman Master sighting!
49cm (48? 50? Small anyway.) Purple fade. Looks original but for seat, good condition *at first glance*. In a Chicago shop selling used bikes for general urban use. Asking $300. I'd be happy to check it out for anyone for whom this is a must-have bike in a must-have size.
I tested my self-discipline today by NOT buying a red/white Ironman Expert ('87?) in what seems to be my size, 52cm. It was dirty but in GWO, worst thing appeared to be some rusty spots on the underside of the top tube near the seatpost...probably from trainer duty. Not great but not terrible. I was about to start haggling with the guy, thinking maybe 20-25% down from his 220 asking price. Then on close inspection I saw a thin horizontal crack in the paint on the top tube, just past the point of the lug. No corresponding mark on the downtube, but feeling both tubes with my fingers it seemed like there might be some slight bulging there. Part of the butting? Maybe. Could the paint crack be from a slight 'bump' to the front, one where the frame flexed a bit, and no harm done? Of course. But the Ironman I crashed two weeks ago got that kind of paint crack (only much much worse), and I would always wonder about it on this bike...and feel I had to disclose it to any future buyer. I walked away from it with no misgivings. There will *always* be another bike.

Was riding through downtown Austin today and saw a guy with the same red/white paint scheme as my '87 Ironman (white head tube and seat tube). As he passed by, I saw the word "Modulus" on there. Anyone have a clue? I've never heard of it before. Could've been a custom decal or something, but I wasn't able to catch any other model identifiers!

Oh whoopsies, I guess in my brief moment of excitement and desire to see other Ironmen, I must've misread the name on the downtube haha =] It wasn't a funny bike and had solid paint not fade (was able to find an example on Google too). Thanks!

I would love to JUMP ON THIS, but, the seller doesn't know if it is an Expert or Master. Also, didn't provide closer pictures to see the condition of the paint and finish. States there is a dime size spot scratch on the forks, but no pic of it. Asking $340 plus $45 for shipping. Right now, no bids on it with starting bid of $280.. So, cheapest it can be had for is $325. If I knew it was a Master, and in good shape, I be real close to pulling the trigger on this...

This bike makes me wish I were taller. Howard or Bianchigirl needs to be up on this.

I have an 88 Ironman Expert Dave Scott, all 105's, and most importantly, Miami Vice Baby! Biopace is strange, (I thought my crank was FUBAR'd from the way it moved), but I like it now. Small crank destroyed itself around 1500 miles, replaced with specialized MTB crank four bucks used. It's been stolen and recovered in the same day, some would say it's soul and mine were screaming from being torn apart and found it's way back to me *in the form of a flat FRONT tire to the woodbeetheef*.
Serial is N6P7842 Made in Japan
Only upgrade were tires and rival 143 seat.
First road bike, paid 100 flat. Over 1000's of miles plus later still love it. When I get a "real" bike, the difference should be surprising. This bike I will keep for a long long long time.
I love the STI (Brake plus Shift?) and modernized bikes. I have asked both my LBS's about this and they basically say they are unwilling to do the work. How hard is this to do? Also, I had a pretty hard crash (30 plus downhill) and wrecked the handlebars. Good time to shorted the stem to a new one and look into this project, as I LOVE MY IRONMAN! I would appreciate any links or specific info regarding parts lists/sizes as again, the LBS's are NOT into vintage steel. Pretty upsetting being pitched an S-WORKS when I have a piece of cycling history in their store, but I digress.

I have to ask though, anyone who owns this paint scheme. Do you get 'yelled' or 'laughed' at for riding a pink and yellow bike? I do, it tears at my soul.
Also, you can't beat telling people "My shoes cost more than my bike man!"
