Crank problem.
 

For some unknown reason, when I put any power into my pedals, my crankset clicks very loudly. Today I tore the crank down and greased the bearings, and the pedals are brand new. And when I went to try it out, it still clicks :mad: I need some serious help with this. If yall need the crankset brand just ask. :)

Check the chainring bolts?

I tired that. . there all really tight

ok, I looked at it really good, and it seems like I have alot of flex in the crankset. But, I took it out the bottom bracket and marvel mystery olied it, but it didnt help. I love this bike, but it sounds like its falling apart! Embarassing!! help please

I had a "Mystery Click" about a month ago, that I could not shake down, until I went ballistic and checked EVERYTHING including my shoes.


Yep, it was the rear anchor fastener on the cleat subplate on my shoe, it was missing, and everytime I gave it the gas, the assembly would lift and click.

Bearings should be packed in grease, not oil.

well, I dont run clipless so thats not the problem :(

We need to know what the bottom bracket brand is - You can tell it is a crank problem because the click always happens at the same time, regardless of the gear that you are in. That's what's happening, right? There are several things that could cause a click, up to and including a crapped out weld in the frame...a seat rail broken or not quite bedded in the clamp (eliminate the seatpost, etc, by riding out of the saddle)...a ball broken in the bearings...a brinneled axle or cup (or both...a ball falls into the dimple with a click)...a crankbolt not tight, causing the crankarm to rock on the spindle...the chainring bolts not quite tight...bum bearings in the pedals...a cage that is a little loose on the pedals...I suppose you could get a click from a cracked crankarm, too, just not for very long. Oh, and the wrong sized bearings (like super record cups with nuovo record bearings)...

Describe the whole setup.

ok, the crankarms dosent have a name, but the pedals were shimano, and everything else, so I guess its a shimano. It clicks in all the gears, and out of the saddle. Cant be a broken weld, would of noticed it aready. Tommorw me and my friend is going to take the whole thing apart, look at every bearing, and pack it with grease. If thats not it. . I dont know what to think :( :(

I'm betting your problem is in the bottom bracket, with the split part of the bet on pedal bearings. I put a bike together last summer that clicked out of the gate. The noise was clearly associated with the bottom bracket - I couldn't find anything wrong, and finally out of frustration changed the bb axle. Click went away.

Cant be that, pedals are a day old! After we redo it tommorw, if it still clicks, I am going to buy a crankset from my friend for 5$ :)

You probably got the threads contaiminated on the pedals and as such, nasty dirt = clicks. Clean it, relube it and see if that fixes it.

ok, When I took the bb apart, coming out with the bearings were seed cases, little pieces of leaves, etc :eek: That HAS to be making the bearings click. I mean I know it was left out in the elements for a really long time probialy, but come on! How could that of gotten in there :rolleyes: tommorw all that old grease is being cleaned out, bearings soaked in gas, and new grease on everything! :) Should stop the clicking you think?

Maybe. One thing mentioned was you had new pedals... did the click happen prior to new pedals? if no, go back a step and see. Also, from time to time a loose BB fixed cup will do it, best to remove then hand tighten and feel for play, you did not say what threading you are using, but sometimes British threading, 1.370 x 24 tpi (LH threading on fixed cup) will be loose but by the nature of the reverse threading won't back out. That nasty gunk in the BB is not helping the problem, while the bb is out remove the seat post and sight down the tube for debris, If the bb is a non cartridge type which we assume it is... be sure you have a bearing sleeve in the middle of it all.

Was it clicking before you put on the new pedals? I thought the first thing you did was repack the bearings?

Cranks themselves sometimes "tic" on the spindles. I've had to really torque those down on occasion.

Last year I had a creaking noise coming from somewhere underneath me (on the bike, smart-aleck). It only happened when I was putting weight on the pedals, so I just knew it had to be the BB. Fortunately, before I tore it apart I was riding and happened to stand up on the pedals. No more creak; it was my arse on the leather saddle.

We have a tandem that doesn't get ridden regularly - the rear seatpost creaks, and every time, I forget until we are out in the country. Then I listen to it until we ride back through town, forget about it until next time. I should go out to the garage right now and fix it.

Ok, the noise happened before the new pedals too. Its a japenese bike so I guess threads too. Well, in a couple hrs me and my friend is takin it apart, so I will reply in what we find.

Last time my BB made a lot of noise, one of the two bearing bulletcages was half grinded between the 11 bullets :)

Sheldon gave me the golden tip to get rid of the cages and put 13 bullets into it.

well im his friend, and we took the crankset apart, cleaned everything out, the bearings had alot of dirt and seeds. After cleaning them in gasoline, and loads of grease, it works great!!No clicking or anything!!!Thanks for all your help :)

ah yes. a rule of bicycle maintenance. Don't use the bottom bracket for grinding seeds, etc.
