I had a customer bring in an Pinarello Montello with Columbus SLX and seven speed Dura/Ace. The customer says the bike is unridden and it appears to have no more than a few miles on it, perfect paint, tho the decals are flaking, and no rust. I am trying to give him some idea of what it might be worth. Mostly I am trying to talk him out of making a beach bike out of it. We may take it off his hands and get it under someone who will appreciate it more. Any ideas would be appreciated, Chuck

The Montello SLX came out in 1985 and was Pinarello's top of the line bike. I would imagine that this bike is worth a lot of money, depending on the year, size and whether it had S-Record or Record components. This is easily worth 4 figures. Don't let him mess it up. While I recall seeing some on Ebay in the past, I couldn't find any that came up on a search of completed auctions, so they are obviously in short supply.
The decals are peeling on all old Pinarellos unless they have been replaced. That shouldn't really effect its value that much. If it is a 60cm frame, don't tell me. My wife would kill me if I bought that bike. |
The montello was the top of the line pinarello - it, and all 80s' pinarellos, had transfers that were closer to pigment than decals; there was essentially no medium for the transfers (I put a NOS set on last year). Without clearcoat, they just cracked and flaked away. I watched a nearly perfect 56-cm '91 with C-Record go unbid at $1200 last month (and still know where it is, if anyone is interested...) I would expect a perfect 7-speed to be somewhere south of that...maybe $800?

Frame alone, if the size is for normal folk and not for a mutant-
$550.00 EASY. |
oh, be nice to the physically endowed. Poguemahone alone is taller than all of the rest of us on this thread. And, at the other end, if you happen to have a 50cm, I know a short woman that really, really, needs a pinarello montello. If it is a 56, then I'm with cardiac - don't tell me about it, i donwannaknow.

Thanks for the replys. We are considering offering him a trade for a geared beach cruiser, if he will go for it.
Sadly, it is not a 56 or I would just buy it off him myself. It is also not super big or small. As a side note one of our employees just got an Eisentrout(sp?) and a Bob Jackson(full touring rig)I should put up some pictures. |
Hey guys, long-time lurker, first-time poster here.
I just wanted to let you all know that there is a 1988 Pinarello Montello 54cm on ebay right now that has never been built and is a no reserve auction. Unfortunately the seller is in Toronto (CANADA) and is selling only for local pick-up and no delivery. |

Thanks! Does anyone know how to tell for sure what model a Pinarello frame is? I see no model designation on the one in Toronto...

It's definitely a Montello. One of the pictures has the name of the model on the top tube. Also, Pinarello's made with different tubes were given different model names. As this one is made of Columbus SLX, it's definitely the Montello. I think this one is a safe bet.
