I have to ask though - are those 7 speed barcons or 8s? I've got some 8-speeds on my Peugeot PSV-10, and I've yet to get it to shift right...

Raleigh eye candy
 

Hey Kurt those are great bikes. Raleigh made some very interesting colors. I have a New Hudson Sports from 1971 with some Raleigh stamped parts on it. I bought it 2 weeks ago at a bike shop closeout auction for $5. This bike is brand new. That New Hudson is a beaut, Tom. Those Canadian editions with their white chainguards (and in some cases, fenders) are very nice - and the chrome fenders make for a unique, spiffy appearance!

I thought I'd post a picture of a sports model my net friend bought for like 20$ (CAN) last summer, he doesnt know what year its from, and there is no date stamped on the hub for some reason, posting this cause I just love the color (raleigh eye candy?):

It's anywhere from late '73 to 1976, although if that trigger shifter lens is clear, it's early '73-1975.

Interesting that it has a full-length gear cable. Does this thing have "Made In England" on it? I seriously doubt it...

I've never seen that color before in a catalogue or on a bike. Must be a Canada-only color, and I suspect that the bike is Canadian-made as well. It looks great, and I'd buy it off of him right now if I hadn't bought the other three Raleighs I have aquired via this Eye Candy post.

P.S.: Provided that the Canadian plants (that is, if it's a Canadian Sports) switched to wider handlebars in mid-'74, this bike can pretty much be pinpointed to late '73-early '74.

Kurt, those are 8 speed barcons, but my rear cog is 7 speed. Its working out really well for me and they surprisingly shift better than my grip or thumb shifters. I have a question, where did you get the paint for your forest green bike?

Just yesterday, I keep on passing three Lance Armstrong wannabes, spandex clad, very athletic looking group of guys. They always left me behind at intersections because my acceleration sucks, but surprise, surprise. I kinda felt uncomfy everytime they catch up to me at stop lights. I just know they are glaring at me.

8-speed, eh? Wonder what's wrong with mine...but that's another story. I've tried them as they are though, and they certainly do shift nicely. I prefer thumbs or triggers for upright bars though. The only grip-shifter I can tolerate is the Sturmey-Archer full-length 3-speed twist-shift.

The paint for the '73? Dupli-Color DS GM 497 Green. Nice color, but I hate the hardiness of the paint - much too easy to scratch. Enamels do better, but are harder to apply smoothly.

I've yet to have a chance to blow off those spandex-weenies on a 3-speed, but I have sorely beat one of 'em once, on my 1984 Raleigh Competition. I still recall him pedaling like a madman trying to catch up...

My wife passes me as well, even when I'm on my zippy '79 Schwinn 10 speed and wearing my super fast spandex, but she smiles, and I'm happy she's outside on a bicycle. If she didn't have the electric assist motor she wouldn't ride. Ridding even with electric power, is better than not riding at all!
