Older Schwinn Le Tour Luxe

I just bought an old Schwinn Le Tour Luxe and would appreciate any links to more information about it.

It is dark grey, black lettering. The stamp on the bottom only reads 868A. And instead of reading left-to-right, it reads vertically, like:

I can't find any other stamps on the bike. It has a 4130 Chro-Moly sticker at the bottom of the seat tube. It has quick-locks on the front and rear wheels, with white-colored 1 1/8" gumwalls (instead of tan). It needed tubes, so I took the wheels off and they are SUPER lightweight. I think they're aluminum, but I'm not sophisticated enough to know. They're running relatively true (a mm or two off).

Aside from the quick-lock, the front wheel has these two wierd springy-tab-like-things with small notches that clip onto small posts on the front fork.

I was looking for a parts donor for my early-80s World, but I think this will become my main bike. After I put in new tubes, freed up the stuck links in the chain, and readjusted the brakes, I took it for a shakedown ride. It is WAY fast!

It also has a rearview mirror mounted to the left brake lever cable. Pretty sure its aftermarket, but just in case its not I thought I'd add it in here.

Can anyone tell me more about the serial number, the year, where it was manufactured, etc.? Thanks for the help.

PTB, there are several Schwinn experts on this forum, Bob Hufford is one who comes to mind. As I recall he helped me date a Schwinn Le Tour Luxe I used to own. I'm NOT a Schwinn expert, but I did a little research during the short period that I owned 2 Schwinn 10-speeds. As I recall, the LeTour was one level below the Paramount and all Le Tours are considered good bikes. I was surprized to find yours has alloy wheels, that will help to reduce weight not to mention the rust problem my bike had with its old, steel chromed wheels. My only other comment is, I don't think the review mirror was standard on that bike. I hope you enjoy your Le Tour Luxe.

If the rear derailleur hanger is NOT integrated (there's a separate hanger that hangs off the dropout to attach the derailleur), then it's an '83. If it is integrated, it's later than '83. Is the tubing decal gold and black and simply says "4130 main tubes and stays"?.......... I've got an '83 le tour luxe, but it's blue. They're great bikes, made at the Schwinn plant in Greenville, Mississippi. And yes, the rims should be aluminum. The serial number should be on the left rear dropout. Also, there should be a four digit date code stamped on to the headbadge, the first three numbers will indicate the numerical day of the year, the last will be the last number of the year. Example: 1853 would indicate the bike was assembled on the 185th day of 1983.

Thanks for the information. I went into the garage to figure it all out. Serial number is SE308051 (on the left rear dropout). And the number on the bottom bracket is still that vertical 868A. Also, the stamp on the badge reads "1373."

Makes sense, it's an '83, built in Mississippi. The date code on the head badge indicates it was assembled on the 137th day of that year ('83).

I repainted mine, it only has the metal headbadge and tubing decal remaining (the decal is pretty tough and should just peel off and can be re-applied if you like). The bike's montetary value isn't much, but they're great bikes to ride. So do what you wish without any worries.

Yep - I found one at a GS for $25, wound up making it into a SS with Campy Record hubs of all things. I'll paint / powdercoat it black and make it my rain bike. Rides fantastic, and I think I've learned that straight guage 4130 is best for my 240#. No more froo-froo triple-butted soandso for me.
