Technium Hierarchy
Does anybody know the levels/diffs for the Raleigh Technium range? I'm about to go pick up a Tech Pro with 105 & biopace ( I think 1988 ). I saw a Prestige with Suntour Cyclone on Ebay, but wasn't sure how that matched with the 105....

cyclone is better, but cheaper back in the day. The tech pro may actually be the better frame. but I kinda think techniums all suck, but then I had one where the rear dropout cracked so I am biased. Cyclone parts are the suntour equal to xt/600 if you know shimano.

I have searched for this Info myself. The Sheldon brown links and history articles dont address the Technium stuff for some reason.
I will ask a LBS that sold these if they have any old catalogs. I bought my 87 Technium 420 new and have managed to replace and upgrade worn parts with same era, barley used, Trash finds. Just recently added some Kelly take-offs. It has been very dependable and is still a very comfortable bike. |
I have an 87 Technium 440 and an 88 PRE. The PRE is definitely the higher end bike. It has 700 wheels and indexed shifting better brakes, 6 speed etc, etc. The 440 rides better partly due to the 27x1 1/4 wheels. Both are close to 20 years old and going strong. No bonding issues as commonly used to bash these bikes. Are they my favorites to ride-no. But being afraid of frame failure is not the reason. Ride quality is pretty harsh by todays standards.

So just out of curiosity, what's the suntour equivalent to shimano 105? |
It appears I accidently double posted this thread......
Words of wisdom from T-Mar: "I believe you're talking about the Technium Tri-Lite series which went, top to bottom: Tinley, Prestige, Pro 105, Comp and Pre. 1988 would be correct." |
