Peugeot Upgrade ?'s

I recently picked up a Peugeot road bike that I believe is a PA-10. Since it isn't a PX I was thinking of making some upgrades to it. This is going to be used as an everyday commuter and I am going to be using it when I finish my first triathlon in the spring. I already like the idea of completing the riding portion on something other than high priced tri-bike or cheap aluminum Performance bike but still keep a good speed. I apologize to the hard core Peugeot fans out there who wouldn't change a thing on their bikes.

1. The downtube shifters need replacing. Is it possible to replace the actual shifters without having to replace the clamp? In other words, adapting a regular downtube ****er to fit on the existing clamp? I have only found one complete set on Ebay (Huret, I think) and it looked like it was going to bring some serious dough. I don't want to go with STI shifters. I already had those on one road bike and I have always liked the downtube shifting that I had on my old Univega.

I was also looking at upgrading the cranks, brakes (if possible), and derailuer.

On my 1981 PSV10 the only component that really needed upgrading was the rear derailleur. I replaced the simplex with a suntour cyclone II.

I believe that simplex shifters are some of the best available and suntour derailleurs like the cyclone are all you'll ever need for smooth reliable shifting.

I wouldn't put anything but these on it:

Simplex Retrofrictions are the best friction downtube shifters ever made.
