Help Upgrading Crank/BB on '71 Dawes Galaxy

(sounds like sacriledge? Ah well..)

A frame that has been biding time on the garage wall will find new life as a single speed.
Lovely old Green and Gold Dawes Galaxy that I first purchased in '71 (as a high school sprite)

It has the old cottered crank, three arm spider.
I don't think will hold up under single/fixed gear riding (I ain't no metal cowboy, but it gets rigorous)
So I think I better update it -- plus I rekon I could skim some weight off too.

I work in an 'Earn-a-Bike" shop so we see lots of cast off bikes, old road bikes -- most of them will never get refurbed for the kids. We usually scavenge parts off these bikes.

QUESTION: Can anyone suggest a type of crank for me to keep an eye on that will likely fit into this vintage bike? E.G. if I see an old Raleigh of this vintage, or should I look for something newer? What issues can I expect? I've done plenty of garden variety hub repacking, brake work, etc... but BB's an Cranks are less familiar... but I have the tools at the shop and willingness to learn. Or.. is it better to buy something -- tho I'd rather do it for as little $$ as possible as this is just cruiser-ocassional commuter.

tanks!
