Hi,
I'm looking for a square-taper, 170mm crank, 52-tooth chainring, with a protective ring - see the attached fingure. Please, send an image of yours, or post an image.

I have the very same crank. I live in Baltimore so you're welcome to have a look - if you really need a photo I'll try and snap one, but the crank's in good condition if that's what you're worried about. Email me if you want to meet up. Maybe you can swap something for it.

You fill me up with curiosity. May I inquire why you would you need one of these, and only the outer ring? It's been driving me crazy ever since I've seen this post - I don't know why.

FYI, I wear bib shorts. I'm a roadie and I don't use a front derailleur, cable, shifter - just the rear set.
But, when up-shifting - smaller cog - I need to keep the chain on the ring, eigh? :D

Interesting. One thing though - how do you get that giant 52 to clear your chainstays?

First, I'm an engineer; most of us, with respect to others, are a weird lot and do weird things.
From my website: (substitute Sugino for kickplate) I like my "kickplate" 'cause, being a roadie, I use neither the smaller chain rings nor a front derailleur, and it presents a cleaner looking frame. My kickplate is similar to a rock-ring used by mountain bikers, but the rock-ring is too small to cover a 52 tooth chainring.
It works this way: When one down-shifts, the chain "crawls" up to a larger cog. When one up-shifts, the chain "drops" to a smaller cog; during a "drop" the resulting loop, like whipping a length of rope or a garden hose, travels down the chain causing the chain to derail to the outside of the chainring. The chain "kicks" the plate, but, remains on the chainring.
Kurt, on clearing the stays, the spacing is already built into the Sugino crank for the 52. It gets a little closer when my handmade kickplate (16 guage aluminum) is on the outside and the 52 is on the inside.

We did meet up and a deal was consummated. Got one more on the way from another dude.
Now I'm looking for something called a "dog fang". Worraps had one on his bike - keeps it from derailing to the inside! Any clues, folks?
