Vintage Components on a NEW frame?

I am totally loving the other thread about Hot Rodding older steel frames with new components, and I am actually doing that with a couple of bikes.

However, I have also started a build list for a reverse build, putting vintage parts on my Tig welded, Tange Prestige, cyclocross bike.

Has anyone retro-fied a more current ride?

Have a great ride!

About the only trouble may be the shifters. Depending on the style shifters and the diameter tubing of the frame you may run into limitations there. Otherwise, just making sure the brakes you pick have the right reach and you should be pretty well in business.

yeah no worries on it at all really, just make sure everything you use is english threading... have you seen the TA cyclocross cranks? super lite and hot... call mel pinto up if you want dope old lite stuff.
http://www.melpintoimports.com/handl...eandgrips.html he's got rad alloy toe clips, good straps, stronglite headsets... ect ect. shame on you for buying a bike with tig welds.

Barcons are a great option.

My own bias is that older frames are generally vastly superior to older components, which GENERALLY makes putting newer components on an older frame more practical than vice-versa. Since circa 1960 derailleurs and cottered steel cranks leave alot to be desired, I have updated one Capo and kept the other nearly all-original, except for obvious safety-related items, such as brake pads (KoolStop salmons rule!).

Having said that, if I were to buy a late model bike or frameset designed for STI, I would be tempted to go retro with nonindexed barcons. :)

I am glad to see Mel Pinto Imports still in business -- that's a name that really takes me back to my grad student / bike shop mechanic / audio equipment repairman days! Thanks for the URL.

Ha ha....That is good!! Actually the bike was given to me in 2000 and I never rode more than around the block once, until this spring and I have put a Thousand miles on it. It is nice.

Lots of lugs in my house, 1938 CCM Professional Flyer 6 Day track bike, 1942 Ernie Clements fix/free Clubman ,1954 Bob Jackson (Nervex lugs),1960 Falcon, 1962 Claud Butler, 1965 Cinelli Model B, 1970 Crescent Pepita Special, 1980 Proctor, 1983 VeloSport, 1988 Proctor/Townsend, 1988 Limongi Special....

I have another lugless bike that I would keep over ALL the above put together, it is a 1974 Teledyne Titanium Track bike. It is one of two built, the first belonged to 60/70's American cycling god Ron Skarin (and was stolen), and mine which belonged to Canadian legend (and my early hero) Jocelyn Lovell.

The trend goes way back. This bike was redone in the early 90's

I have a '72 Italvega Super Special with Shimano STI/600/Dura Ace group. The STI derailleur cables stop and run right through the original Campy Record downtube shifters. It's got a Selle Trans Am titanium saddle and other modern goodies on top of Campy stuff. It's a beautiful bike and I'm gonna sell it! 56cm & rootbeer brown/chrome $450.

Funny. On a group ride about month or two ago I noticed a brand new Trek 5200 OCLV frame built up with old school Dura Ace downtube shifters and aero brake levers. I have to say, it looked very clean.

Good on you! If you have a suggestion that out retrogrouches this group, it must be cool. Besides, when people ask about it, you can just say it's your bar bike.
