So, why did this RD bolt fit a Peugeot?

I was cleaning up an RD that I took from an old Miyata (310 I think) and the hanger bolt seemed small to me. I measured it at 8mm and then I gave it a try on the Peugeot PKN hanger (which I had measured some time ago as 8mm) and it fit perfectly. So, my question, how does a Shimano RD bolt from an old Miaya end up with the same threading as a French threaded 1980 Peugeot? More curious than anything else, as I thought I was going to have to use Simplex or Huret (I know either of those is more "correct", but if I have an RD that works, I can get on the road a bit sooner and change to a Simplex later when i find one).

ok, or my remark is gonna make sense or i'm getting beat for my noobiness
Aren't all RD's have the same bolt? I never ever had problems with interchancing RD's. Peugeots and non -peugeots.

Peugeots ceased with the French threading in about 1980 (I have a 1981 that's French/thread-free.).

There was never a French-threaded derailer hanger. Earlier French bikes used a hanger that was not threaded. The derailers were held on by a bolt from the back of the hanger. The standard derailer mounting thread is 10 mm X 26 tpi, not 8 mm.

I thought the standard was 10mm; so at least at some point in time Shimano must have been using 8mm and/or 10mm as the original RD from my 1975 traveler is also 8mm. Hmmm, makes me wonder how old that miayta was...
