Stronglight crank puller for sale or in the Bay Area?

(Apologies for cross posting to the Mechanics list; I figure there might be some people who don't read both lists.)

I'm looking to either

a) buy your Stronglight crank puller (long shot, I know, but it doesn't hurt to ask) or

b) find a shop/mechanic in the Bay Area who has a Stronglight crank tool.

I've already had one crankset ruined b/c a mechanic used the standard Park crank tool.

Thanks,
Greg

They can be found on eBay - plan on doing an 8 second snipe, and have your top side somewhat north of $105.00.

I removed a Stronglight set yesterday with my TA fit tool. I can't speak for all of them, but this one (single ring, 70's) had a 23mm interior thread, like TA. TA fit tools are available in the UK for about £10, and I think cheaper in the states. Have a look on the net. The one I bought has the 22mm Shimano fit on one end, and the TA on the other.

Geez...glad I bought one in 1974

I bought one here for $58 plus a reasonable shipping charge, brand new.

Scroll down through the page. It is listed under Miscellaneaous.

Wish I had known about that one - back when I was looking, I hit about ten sellers who usually list the tool, only to find out that they were all out of stock and had no idea when the next shipment was coming in. At which point I turned to eBay.

The killer to this is that back around 1986, convinced that I was never going to mess with a bicycle again, I sold off all my specialized tools (including a lot of the Campagnolo stuff, VAR rethreaders for bottom brackets, etc.) to a kid taking his first decent paying job in a bicycle shop. Spent a lot of time last fall while tearing down the Raleigh to put it on the road kicking myself for being so stupid.

Of course, now I'm slowly rebuilding the tool box - again. Little purchases like the Stronglight tool I justify as penance for criminal stupidity. And I'm capable of being ham-handed enough that I absolutely will not make-do with a makeshift substitute.

That sounds like a VAR #393. I don't know why they'd be cheaper here when they come from over there. The Stronglight threads are slightly over 23mm. You got away with it, but it could have been a disaster! They're really hard to find right now, but I checked the latest VAR catalog and it appears that they're still making them.

PM me and I'll try to meet up with you in the City and I'll use my old (and correct) Stronglight remover on your crank...Ladies and Gents: it never leaves my hands. I also have the Park tool with the "TA" 23mm side, we can try each one for proper fit. Even though some people will swear that it's impossible, I swear that I have come across ONE Stronglight crank that took the TA tool and NOT the "correct" 23.35mm (or whatever bizarre fraction it is) SL remover. I have done my share of work with both tools, and I know what they are supposed to fit like...never stripped the threads off either brand crank...yet...

Just a BTW, I can't believe that American Cyclery on Frederick/Stanyan wouldn't have a Sronglight remover, but if not there then how's about Salon de Bicciclette on Filmore/Haight or the Bike Nook in the Outer Sunset? (Those Nook guys have been around since I was a kid, they must have the old tools)

If those don't pan out, call Clarence Witt at Witt's Bicycle Shop in Hayward; 510-538-8771

I have to tell you, this did not SEEM to be .5mm too small. Maybe it's just me though, and the cranks were not siezed on badly.

Just in case anyone is as desperate for a 23mm puller for T.A. as I was, The Yellow Jersey has pleanty. I just ordered one for $39.95. He said that they are Specialties T.A. branded.

Bought one...

Thanks for all the tips and advice. I ended up buying one from John at velostuf.com. Apparently he had a bunch at one time but sold nearly all of them and I just bought the second to last one.

Crank Pullers

Just to stretch this thread out further, I have a TA branded puller that fits really good (nice and tight) on my stronglight 49D cranks, and then I have a different TA branded puller, as well as a VAR (#4038 I believe) which fit good, but slightly loose when not tightened all the way in.....go figure!
