These three sites should be a good place to start finding out about the frames we call Mixtes. I’ve as yet not been able to find out which bike company came up with this frame design first, or how old the design really is. Information about Mixtes seems somewhat hard to come by...
P.S. Great find... that's a great looking Mixte you've got there.

Just finished my annual contribution to a charity silent auction and thought I'd share it. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to take a "before" pic.

A new mixte revealed - Trek Belleville

Just wondering, Could there be some similarities with the structural charcateristics of a classic Mixte to the newest CF framed bikes with the similarly downsloping top tubes??
Although I know that the "tubes" on a these CF frames act more like monocoque structures, the more compact dimensions of the mixte's "diamond" plus all the triangulation occurring within the frame sometime leads me to think that it might be able to challenge a steel "men's" frame's stiffness, as would the latest CF frames might......Although admittedly, the long, unbraced (from the front) portion of the seat tube in a mixte might present the weakest part of the frame format, so in-saddle power grinding might not be one of it's stregnths........I wonder if adding a third top tube to bridge the seat cluster and the head tube might make for an megastiff hybrid of some sort!..........Just wondering......

Work in Progress
I wanted to build a fancy little mixte for a summertime city bike using the wheels and Nexus 8 drivetrain from my Jamis Commuter and save the Commuter for a bad weather/winter ride. I was going to use a Soma Buena Vista, but, while they were backordered, I ran across this Raleigh Gran Prix or Super Course for $75 on CL. I stripped it to frame,HS and BB and sold the parts for $50 leaving me a great riding frame for $25. I've got it stripped, repainted and waiting for some period decals from England. I will build it up in my spare time during the winter and have it ready for spring. Before and after photos are attached.

Here's an old Raleigh mixte I picked from the neighbor's trash. It cleaned up nice enough to make a local college student very happy:

Shogun 400 Mixte, mid 80s, with owner's manual, bought in Ohio from original owner. She had her LBS change out seat, bars (steel), and tires (1-3/8s) in search of comfort but apparently not enough as bike appears to have been ridden little. My wife likes the bars and seat but we found her another Shogun (pics to follow) with a larger frame so I'll either swap or find something similar. This one has a Tange 900 frame, 'Tangaloy' fork, Shimano brakes and derailleurs, Araya alloy rims, etc.
There is no Shogun catalog on the web to peruse (that I've found) but as they largely went with model #s in the hundreds, 400 was in the middle of their line.
As we now have the other Shogun I was going to sell this one to defray some of my ballooning bike expenses, but instead I think we're going to give it to Father-in-law's lady friend who, in her 70s, wants to get back into cycling. It's a very nice bike with an appealing color scheme and I'm happy to keep it in the 'family.'

Yes, front wheel is on backwards! I'd just picked the bike up when I did this pic, it's not even wiped down.
Mid to late 80s Shogun 400, 22" frame, which seems to be unusual. Pinstriping, logos on seat stays, 'Cr-Mo' graphics on top tubes are a little busy, but the metallic blue paint is very nice, and in near mint condition. Champion #5 frame and maybe fork (?), Shimano Tourney brakes, Altus derailleurs, Araya alloy rims, etc.
This bike is a good fit for wife though I'll be adding North Road bars and maybe a plusher saddle--and taming those cables. This started out as my new interest but with this bike I think we've found a a fitness/fun activity we can do together!

Picked up this early '80's Raleigh Gran Sport from somebody's trash. Spent the weekend overhauling it -- new tires & cables, regreased all bearings, cleaned what I could. It won't win any beauty contests, but it's perfectly functional and my wife is happy with it.

An 80-ish Austro Daimler Puch for $20 off CL. Major cleaning done/the hoods were dry rotted. Nervar cranks and shimano 600 gearing. I think the bars are exclusive to this model, as I've never seen this shape before. Ditto on the brake levers. Hard to choose between my moto and this one

Not my mixte but seen at a club ride. Puch Mixte with Cromoly frame. Sorry the pics aren't better as all I had with me was my cell phone camera.
