Okay... here we go again. First of all, know that I am a very inconsistent blogger. I started The Mixte Gallery a while back. While I like finished product, I am prone to lazy periods when I didn't post. I tried to get caught up, did okay for a while, then got lazy again.

I've recruited a co-editor for the blog, so hopefully when I get lazy he picks up the slack. His first posting to the blog is up. I think between Jon and myself, we'll be able to keep the blog going a little more consistently.

Humbly yours,

CCM Elite mixte, worth her weight in nostalgic value (and that's what I tell my friends when they laugh at how heavy she is). It was love at first sight, and I picked it up as-is from my LBS. I love bombing around on this and feel like to total super-star; I swear I will never own anything but mixtes from this day forward.

It's downright shocking how heavy these beasts are, a good friend of mine loves hers though , rides it daily.

Antaresia,
It may say CCM Elite on the decals, but that's a 5 spd Raleigh Sprite absolutely ident-
to mine right down to the color. Aside from the decals, the only difference i think I see
is that yours may have 26" wheels, where as mine is 27". If you look at the slotted arm
to which the brake pad mounts, you'll see that they are set up to adjust to 26", 27",
and even 28" wheels. I found mine in a thrift store for $25. It was covered with dust
and cobwebs. Much to my delight, when I cleaned it up, I discovered no trace of dirt
inside the fenders, nor any trace of mechanical wear at all. It had never been ridden.
I was gonna post it, but you've done it for me.
It should have a Suntour GT derailleur; if you look at the inside of the arm there is
a tiny letter stamped there that is the year code which you can look up at suntour.
It may be a bit heavy, but this is a very sturdy, well-made bike. With a bit of
conversion I've turned mine into the perfect road touring bike. Lose the awful old
Raleigh grips for something more comfortable and ergonomic.

Oh man, love that Peugeot! great color and condition. I've got a thing for Peugeots: two men's, two mixtes, and have put similar saddles (B67's, B68) and bars (nitto promenade and albatross). I put a tall nitto tec stem and north road style bars on my latest.

Out of curiosity, what was the budget for this build? I'd like to get a build of the origin8 done myself with some differences (moustache handlebars and 650bs if possible on the 42cm frame), but apparently the moustaches themselves drive the cost up over $900. Rather disappointed about the elevating cost, so I'm looking for others' experiences with this mixte build. Thanks!

I've got the same Mixte but she's about to undergo serious modifications:

So far, she just has different handlebars (not her final selection) and a Brooks B17 but she's awaiting new tires, wheels, cables and other refinements.

I caught this little guy out in the wild yesterday, I've never seen such nice lugwork on an old Nishiki.

Can any of you Mixte folks date mine?

Raleigh Sprite-5, Taiwan manufactured sticker, 27 x 1 1/4", Suntour group, serial # F1021879 (beneath the BB).

Checked the Sheldon Brown site. No luck there. :(

Hi Max,

From what I see on Retro Raleighs, if I'm interpreting it correctly, the 5 speed Sprite was discontinued in 1976. The 1977 catalog page shows only 3 speed or 10 speed versions being offered. The 1976 catalog page shows the Sprites having a flatter fender than yours as well as self adjusting brakes, which were first introduced in 1973 and discontinued not long after that. So I would guess that your Sprite is early '70's, but it is only my guess.

I've posted a couple of photos of my '75 Sprite frame set that I bought from an e-Bay seller a couple of years ago; mine also has the flatter fenders (not shown) and self adjusting brakes. Same color as your but not a Mixte frame:

If this helps, I also have a '72 Raleigh Sports with the same decals on the seat tube.

Maxturbo 10-06-11 11:49 AM

72' it is then. That will go w/my 72' Nova!

I'm just saying my '72 had the same decals, your Sprite falls into a certain span of years, possibly 1965 to 1972. This may help: http://www.jaysmarine.com/raleighdecals.html

Oh, nice car. I have a '72 also:

Max, that last web site link I sent you does explain the Raleigh serial numbering system.

Maxturbo 10-06-11 02:45 PM

If you mean this link http://www.jaysmarine.com/TH_raleigh_serials.html THAT'S the one I checked via the Sheldon Brown page.

rawly old 10-10-11 09:20 AM

If it's Taiwanese, it's most likely late 80s even though it looks like a 72. That's a good thing. 80s bike are more desirable
for riding.
If you look on the inside of the rear derailleur the is a miniscule letter stamped there. That is suntour's year code which
corresponds to that of the bike. You can look up the code at suntour's site.
Some of the best 80s bikes were being fabricated in Taiwan, Raleigh and Bridgestone among them. Even today,
Rivendell frames are made there.
The technology on your bike may be old school, but it's quality worksmanship and durable. Tuning the brakes and
derailleur ca be a bit quirky, but once they're set up, they stay that way.

Maxturbo 10-10-11 09:29 AM

I'll check that out! :thumb:

Sorta' makes sense, as the hubs that I re-packed had caged (verses loose) bearings, which may push the date / technology to newer as well.

Thanks! I'll let ya' know what I find.

Max

Per this site...

http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm

SunTour derailleurs have a two-letter date code. On rear derailleurs the code is stamped on the back side of the inner parallel arm. On front derailleurs it is stamped on the back side of the inner cage.
So I found this...

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...rbo/RearDR.jpg

That breaks down to August 1980, assuming that the circled "WH" is the code, vice some trademark logo, as it LOOKS to me as such. I was expecting some rather simple font, primitively stamped in place and not such an elaborate deal. Maybe not?

Can anyone confirm their lettering / character style? :)

And I don't have a front DR (5 speed) to verify from either.
