I'm in the early stages of putting a town bike together for a friend of mine. I'm hoping to get her psyched on mixte frames because I think they're cool and I just want to build one up. (On a side note, if you live in/around the Portland area and want to sell a 54cm, 700c mixte frame, let me know.)

My Mixte… It’s a Fuji, a 1985 model with a aprox. 20” frame 27” wheels, and 12 speed Suntour components. I will call this a before picture, because I have a lot of work to do to get this bike up to reliable riding condition, but that is one of the reasons I bought it. The fun of working on it… I haven’t figured out which way I want to go with the handlebars yet, but I do know that the pink wrap tape has got to go.

I may convert it into a more rider friendly touring/utility style bike, I just don’t know yet. I’ll post an after picture someday, but it will be a part time project, so it may be some time.

Yep, I’m leaning toward some swept back, or flat bars at the very least, I’m really not much into the drop bars now, like was when I was a teenager… The frame of the bike looks light blue in the picture, but it is actually a silver metallic color… Why someone ever put pink tape on the bars is beyond me, but hey, each to their own. Come to think of it though the tape may have started out red, and just got sun faded.

Actually, I rather like the pink bar tape (but then again, there's nothing wrong with pink as long as EVERYTHING isn't pink).

I still like my drop handlebars, even on my mixtes .

But, after two lower back surgeries, and a total left hip replacement… I don’t know if I can get down low enough to make use of the drops…
Besides pink is ok, but it's just not my thing.

I don't know if this will work for Bionicycle, but;

I'm on my 4th left hip, have arthritic hands, damaged shoulders and lower back trouble. But after 20 years I've been able to go back to dropped bars on 3 of my bikes, thanks to very tall, short extension stems. My drops are at the same height as other people's tops, but I still get the benefit of multiple hand positions.

Thanks, for the advice… wow fourth hip replacement, I have had one, and that is one too many.

I’ll just have to wait and see which way I want to go on my Mixte project. The bike came with drop bars, but I also like Dutch type bars, or even mustache bars… I’ll just have to see what I can come up with. Maybe I’ll try all three before it’s all said and done.

Not 4 replacements, I was born with the 1st one.

One upright bar that gets no respect but is pretty nice is the Wald #8095. It has just a little more rise than a typical 3 speed bar but the bend is about the same and the grip area is longer.

Finally complete, after almost a year of acquiring parts, finding time to wrench etc etc.

Built for my wife, it's an old Master Sports gaspipe mixte from the curbside hard rubbish, powdercoated gloss white along with the fenders, the racks and bars were also done in blush pink to match the Velocity rims/bottle cage.

Drivetrain is Sugino Super Maxy to a SRAM Spectro7 hubgear, 40:21 in direct drive.

Still looking for a better wicker basket for the front, and a nice chrome/alloy chainguard
