Columbus Seat Tube Size Question

I have a mid 80's Colnago, and a Campagnolo seat post that's marked as 27.2. I'm not able to get the post to be held securely. Did Columbus tubesets ever take 27.4 seatposts?

Some of the lighter sets did use larger, 27.4mm posts, Record and KL for instance. But I believe that's it, without going into more mdoern sets which are readily evident by oversize or odd shaped tubes. Most likely the post was marked with the wrong size or somebody was heavy handed with the reamer/honer. Did you actually measure the post? The seat tube should still clamp a post that's even 2 sizes under.

Thanks. The seat tube doesn't look distorted in the least, and the bike is quite light. Unfortunately, I don't have calipers yet.

The bike is a CX model (which I've struggled to find information about) with a braze on FD that was recently liberated from Belgium.

Well, I'm presuming it's a CX. That's what's on the chrome fork. The tubes are not aero though.

Hey bianchigirll, it's a 60 cm. Too big for me, about the right size for my son - who's about your height. My LBS can get you a new Colnago.

Just had a 2nd thought. Maybe the problem is the binder bolt itself. They come in various lengths. If it's too long, the male portion will bottom out in the female half, before the tube is cinched tight enough on the post. Also, sometimes the female sleeve is too long and bottoms against the other ear of the lug, before the post is properly cinched. Though it's not pretty, just try using a standard bolt and nut, with a couple of washers. If allows the post be adequately cinched, the problem is with the binder bolt.

Thanks everyone,

I'm going to the LBS today to get the post measured. It goes into the seat post more easily than nearly any other properly-sized seatpost I've had. If it is properly marked, and if the bolt hasn't bottomed out, I'll be shopping for another seatpost.

A couple minutes and a set of calipers provided the answers to my riddle. The seat tube is 27.2mm. The seat post is 27.2 at the top, and 26.8 near the bottom. Evidently, someone monkeyed around with it - possibly to fit a 26.8 or 27.0 tube. May have to look for another seatpost.
