I've already screamed 'spammer', and would never even click on one of those links.

Hmmmmm, there was a Schwinn Paramount P-15 with full Campy Record on Western Mass' CL and by the time I got back from work, spotted the ad and email the guy, the bike was sold. Lame. Oh and he said it has been in storage for years and he was selling it for 75 bucks...

I've been following CL religiously to spot something of this caliber and the one day. Terrible

Religiously is not nearly enough! You have to become seriously OCD about it. Sometimes I take breaks and actually ride my bike.

A clean looking old Trek. Price seems a little on the high side, but it's the bay area.

Vintage Trek road/touring bike - $350

I emailed the guy twice within 15minutes of him posting and he didnt get back untill hours later asking about what was my standover height...what does he need my standover height for? LOL By the time he emailed me this morning, he sold it. I bet there was quite a few folks inquiring about the bike.

27" x 7/8" tires on San Jose's craigslist.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/bik/743393708.html

I have a bundle of (10) Wolber 'Ralleye" tires still in the moisture protective casing. These are 27 x 7/8" inch. Great deal if you work on bikes and need 27" tires. Sidewalls are yellow/gumwall.

Jack (not "Jake") Taylor "Tour of Britain" model - 1966

https://portland.craigslist.org/yam/bik/743624522.html

Would certainly be cheaper than my plan to order a custom rando bike.
Tempting...

I bought that exact same bike in nearly the same condition for $20 at a yard sale. I got it home, and found that someone had severely bent the drive size chainstay...so bent that the dropout had separated from the frame. Bummer, but now I have a great parts bike

Maybe "The Guy" wanted the bike to end up with someone that it would fit and consequently actually ride and appreciate rather than with someone who was planning to just flip it for a huge profit. Imagine that, someone who collects and sells vintage bikes for the love of the bikes instead of the love of money. “The Guy” should be ashamed of himself.

The "guy" should not be ashamed of himself. As the second person in line for that Paramount and one that would actually fit the large frame, I've thought allot about the sellers dilemma; selling to some one who fit the bike and is knowledgeable enough to appreciate and cherish the bike vs selling to the first in line.

As C&Vers, we care about bikes. The ride, workmanship, and history of classic bikes makes out heart beat a little faster (sometimes much faster as in the case of this Paramount) . It is natural that we should want bikes that are in our possession, should we choose to pass them on, to be as appreciated by their next owners. Part of appreciating of a machine that was designed to be ridden is riding (along with cleaning, showing off, polishing, drooling over etc. ). So if the "guy" cares about the new owner appreciating and riding the bike he is right to ask for a size.

RS

PS- Mods: I feel that this discussion warrants a thread of its own. Is there a way to liberate my post and the others on this topic from the ebay/cl thread and start a new thread?

You could just as easily do it yourself. Just start a thread, cut and paste the quotes defining the issue, and you've got the debate started.

I found a 70's Raleigh an Freecycle about a week ago. I emailed the lady instantly but didnt hear back until this past Thursday. She said there was one other person in line but call on Sunday to see if it was still there. So I called and it was still available and only about 5 blocks away!! So I threw my trailer on and rode over to the house and there was this frame sitting on the back porch with a box full of Campy parts.
Got it home and looked through all the parts. The left pedal is missing as well as the headset bearings. Then I found some cracks in the end of the seat stays.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

I believe all the parts are original which include
Campy cranks, Cinelli bars and stem, Weinmann levers and Type 730 sidepulls, Huret shifters and derailers and a Brooks saddle.

Any chance this ad was a hoax? Sure it seems like a humongous waste of time for some sociopath to do it, but there's a few regular poster-pranksters here on NYC CL who seem to get their yuks putting up posts for fictional treasures just to read the frantic replies.

I'm not saying I don't believe there's decent people who don't need to cash in on every unused item of theirs desired by someone else - there are and I've been on the receiving end of such good souls, but the perfection of that listing is a little fishy. Someone knows enough to list it as a P-15 but only wants 75 for it aaaand it's been in storage for years...wow...

Now this looks like a deal...

A Next that was originally bought for $379 plus $108 shipping, including a $90 custom made saddle.

https://newjersey.craigslist.org/bar/745260318.html

And if you like that deal I have some oceanfront property in Arizona I'd be willing to part with cheap.

Ride it home. Much beautiful surface rust, but frame is solid. New 26 x 2.25 wheels cost me $130. Am losing storage space due to forced eviction by realtor swine. It could use cleaning, front brake pads could be replaced, seat cleaned up, that's about it. Needs a little TLC.
26" with about a 31 " standover.
See Pics below
