I did a little trading with my LBS today and brought home a Panasonic Sport 500 for my son. It is a big step up over the X-Mart mountain bike he had. Except for brake pads, tubes, and cables, it is all original.

Wow, it still has the plastic over the head badge too! Not shabby at all. Looks to be an '85 or so... electric blue is a nice color too.

Don't mean to be a tease, but no pics. The wife is out of town with the camera.
Anyhoo, I just picked up a Triomphe-equipped Marinoni crit / fully loaded touring bike. Let me explain.
The bike was originally a crit bike - steep hta, tightish clearances, high bb. Somewhere along the road the owner had it sent back to Marinoni for a repaint, as well as mid-forkblade rack bosses, rear rack fittings, extra bottle cage fittings, and a pump peg. Sky blue pearl coat with yellow decals. Fleur de Lis lug and fork crown cutouts.
It came complete, save for wheels, and a seatpost. I haven't put racks on it yet, but that's the intention. Right now, I have it set up pretty racy - 12-23 cluster in back, 52-42 up front, tubular wheels borrowed from my Rossin, swapped out the Cinelli Criterium bars for Giro D'Italia bars (shod in white cello tape!).
I want to tour on this bike next summer, but I'm not sure how I'll set it up.
Lowriders up front, and panniers / platform trunk in the back, that's for certain.
I'll probably swap out the crankset for something I can gear more reasonably... not too much selection in the 116BCD world.
Probably move the shifters from the dt to bar ends, and maybe switch bars to something with cable grooves and ergo bends (I know, I know). I'll certainly switch to more comfortable brake levers - Cane Creek or some such.
Alternately, I can do the unthinkable, and move my Ultegra 10sp group from my race bike to the 'noni for the duration of my trip. I'll have to spread the dropouts a few mm, but everything else should work out easily.
All for now. pics when I get around to taking them.

I've built several 9 and 8 speed Al/CF modern bikes (road and TT) recently from my parts stash. For some reason they're all my size and are awesome rides. They're mostly posted in the 50+ forum.
I'm actually cutting back to concentrate on mundane items like yard work, house maintenance, refinishing furniture, and a second job (contract programming) to pay the tax bills.
The bike fund is replenished and the next big expenditure is a 500w Bionx kit for my cross bike.

Picked up a set of Sugino 75 track cranks (165mm) out of the lbs "used crank bin". No chain ring, practically new, $20. The mechanic told me not to by them as they had a very "weird BCD, like 144 or something".

I believe this to be my best find… It may not be a vintage bike, but I have used it to bring a few old bikes home.
We stopped at a garage sale and this was propped against the wall with a $20.00 sticker on it. A Yakima roof rack completely set up for 3 bikes, with locks and even a windscreen (that I removed).
And while I was looking at it, the lady having the sale told me she would let it go for TEN BUCKS!
I giggled for hours!
The dove decoy has become our driving companion & he rides up there whenever there are no bikes attached.

Schwinn Passage
Got this Schwinn Passage yesterday for $25 bucks, will probably put some tires and clean it up for the wife, since it's only 48cm.

On Saturday I biked around the block to look for garage sales that might have a threaded 27" rear wheel and I found this for five dollars:
I'm aching to ride it, but I'd need a seatpost twice as long as it's got. What do you think, think I'll look like (or be) a complete tool riding around on a tiny Bianchi given that I'm 5' 11"?

A $5 Bianchi? Put it on your local CL for $200 and it will be gone in an afternoon. And, to answer your question, I am just an inch taller than you and I couldn't ride a bike that size even if I wanted to. My knees would hit the bars.

I measure the seat tube at 50 cm and the top tube at 53 cm; is it weird that I actually feel pretty comfortable standing over it? I think it was a woman's triathlon bike. Shimano components, largely 105, with a six-speed freewheel (Shimano 600, notched extractor-type). Maybe it follows the older design tendencies for higher top tubes and longer reach? Ahh, what do I know.
Seriously though, the closest thing to a road bike I ride is an old Supercycle with drop bars, that thing feels screwed up even without anything to compare to. At $5, this bike cost me $5 more than my other three, (ok, techically I got a Mercier mixte abomination along with it for those same five bucks) and I'm trying hard to stave off the buyer's remorse...
I'll probably play with it for a while. Needs new tires, bearings, chain, some nice steel toe clips and another 100-150mm of seatpost if I'm ever gonna ride it, though.

What kind of tubing does the sticker say it is?
Earlier this year I bought a similar Bianchi in a purple hue (and wearing a Shimano 600 group) at a thrift store for $35. I couldn't get it in the car right away so I paid for it and they put a hold tag on it. When I returned to retrieve it a few hours later I was told a couple of different patrons tried to walk out with it, but without the claim ticket their attempts were foiled.

There's a sticker at the top of the seat tube that says "Guaranteed built with Magna Ishiwata Double Butted Tubes Forks & Stays," so I assume it's a Japanese-made frame. Interestingly, the rims have big "Made in Italy" stickers and "Product of Europe" ones around the valve holes. It definitely sat in a basement for years, judging by the dust. Shifter cables and chain are rusted, and there's spotting of rust on the chainstays and the fork. The tread is peeling off the tire casings.

I have been selling and not buying lately, so not many 'catches', but I picked up a Huffy Mixte last weekend at a garage sale just for the handle bars, which now are perched on a Schwinn Breeze that I am working on, and a pair of Suntour Power Ratchet Thumb shifters. Not bad for $8.00.

You could sell that for $350 here in Chicago, if it were 100 overhauled and ready to go.

bought the fiori just to ride, commute, play with. when i found the proctor for that price my instinct was to grab it and flip it b/c it could fetch more than what i paid. but then i rode it. and now i think i'm just going to keep them both. fiori as my everyday bike, proctor for nice days only
