rechroming stem in NY
I have a nice vintage stem whose finishing is in less then perfect condition, but not horrible condition. I read somewhere else in these forums that the price to rechrome the piece would be dependent on the condition of the item (work involved to prep the piece) so it might be worth it for me to rechrome.
Does anyone have experience with having this done, contacts/addresses? (locally if possible?) Thanks! |
Chroming anything is very $$$$$$$$. If it an aluminum stem just polish it with a buffer or a wire wheel. I am guessing that to chrome almost anything and do it well you are talking $100 and up. Roger

I have no contacts but I can suggest calling motorcycle shops (like choppers and harleys) and asking them where they get their chroming done if you can't find anything in the yellow pages. I found chromers online usuing the yellow pages no problem. I had a fork re-chromed here in Canada for $70 and the min charge was 45 or something... I think a stem should be the minimum, but make sure you remove the hardware first!!! That being said, the attention to detail was not as good as I had hoped. The chrome was pretty thick on the drop-outs and they are less shapely and the campagnolo is almost obscured.. they may have even sanded the insidee of the drop-outs a little. I should have been more specific with instructions but oh well, it looks better than it did and didn't cost much.
