Benotto "Mutt" beater hits the road!

Thanks to the abundance of spare parts after stripping a few bikes during my big cleanup, I went ahead and built the Benotto up this morning, using whatever parts on hand suitable for a beater.

End result came out rather nice, considering - but still ugly enough to hopefully deter any potential theves (and with four various locks on this machine, I doubt if they'll try. Weighs in at 30 pounds.

Took it for its first test ride this afternoon, and save for a few small problems (POS pump clip, old tires, cheap bell, slight saddle adjustment nessessary), there isn't a problem with it.

Sure enough, it also wouldn't index right either no matter how much I adjusted it, but I suspect it's the 7-speed narrow chain combined with the 6 speed freewheel that is causing the problem. Friction mode is fine with me though - it can malfunction in indexed mode until it croaks, for all I care.

Might mount some front panniers and a front rack later on - also need to put a notepad & pen holder, a cell-phone holder, and a headlight on the handlebars. Will probably make the headlight out of an old lamp shell and some spare LEDs I have on hand.

Take care,

-Kurt

P.S. to Pastor Bob: Those are the old 105 + Biopace cranks. Turned out that two of the chainring bolts needed to be drilled out, so I simply swapped another 105 crankset with the fellow I had initially traded the Biopace crankset with. The chainrings (not to mention wheels, FD, and shifters) are from that pink Schwinn Prelude I parted out a few months back.

Pretty classy. Looks a little like how I envisage my single speeded Raleigh Quasar after it's repaint. Kinda.

Yea - minus the ugly black paint, scratches, and disgusting hand-painted lugs of the former owner's doing...

;)

A level top tube with upright bars sometimes does enough for theft proofing in it's own right, hehe.,,,,BD

Not in Miami!

Friend of mine just had a ****ty Free Spirit (or comperable) MTB jacked from his driveway - not even running condition. Go figure.
