C&V, but not exactly bike related

Just wanted to share! I wrote a four page feature on a trip I did to India in an old (1971) bus, for Practical Classics, the UK's best selling classic car mag. It came out this week, and now they've commissioned me to write a two pager for the next issue on the Sunbeam Tiger. I think it's going to be a regular gig!

If you write about the Tiger, you must include a blurb about Maxwell Smart.

Did he drive one? I've got quite a limited number of words, but I might well mention that, thanks!

Maxwell Smart, aka Agent 86 from Get Smart 60's TV show, the car was seen most often in the title sequence only. The actor Don Adams, owned one in real life. Look up an old issue of Road & Track.

For classic content, R&T also road tested in an April issue a Maserati bicycle once.

The better spy deries were British, The Avengers, to look at a young Diana Rigg & the Elan. Steed's Bentley... Don't forget The Prisoner, my mom really wanted a Lotus Super 7.

Cool SammyBoy !!!
Is there a link to your article ?

In the early 80's I used to be a staff artist for a magazine called
Super Ford. We did a lot of stuff on Tigers too.....
I could try to find my Tiger issue and scan it for you but I dont want
to promise anything timely because the box is still in the packed/unpacked
section of the basement

Good Luck !

It's not online, that I know of. Here is the website for the mag:

https://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/

You can see the cover of the current edition - the banner over the top mentions my article.

There, there. Focus on your Midget's graphite throwout bearing, then you won't feel quite as bad.

Do you own a Tiger? Is there a link for the mag? It would be fun to read the article.

"Chevette buying guide" -- hahaha

I suppose it's a topic for another day, but I have long suspected that many of us on C&V are also C&V car and/or motorcycle enthusiasts.

Hey; that TOB wasn't all that bad... That same type was used in plenty of other old Brit cars as well. You just needed to remember to take your foot off the pedal while waiting at lights.

The link for the mag is further up the thread, but they don't online-enable articles (I think). I don't own a Tiger, but the article is "What we love about", so it's down to me to find what Tiger owners really like, and to write a brief history etc. It's not road-testing 50's Maserati's, but it's cool for me to be writing about a topic I'm interested in.

And yes, as well as classic bicycles, I have a big soft spot for cars, motorbikes etc. And I own a 1971 Bedford Plaxton Panorama Elite II bus.

And that kind of forward-thinking engineering design helped make the British auto industry what it is today. Whoever thought that thing was acceptable in a postwar vehicle was either a close contemporary of Joseph Lucas, or was under the impression ball bearings no longer existed after the Schweinfurt raids.

I think the original design called for a slab of Canadian back bacon, but due to wartime meat rationing, graphite was substituted.

That being said, I sure miss my Midget, and B-GT. My Austin America, not so much...

I think the synchros in my midget were made by Lucus.
I learned early on to shift it without the clutch.
After the key switch in the column went bad, a doorbell
button was wired under the dash to engage the starter
I miss that car the most out of all the one Ive had though...
The Midget was almost like a bicycle in the respect that larger
vehicles couldnt see it very well and the problems that go along with
being semi invisible to idiots.

Early VWs and (gasp) even Porsches used a solid graphite TO bearing...and this was GERMAN engineering! Tho most everybody upgraded theirs to the "improved" ball-bearing unit as soon as they did that first clutch job. (I'm a committed old car fan: currently a 1968 BMW 1600TI)

Wasn't Maxwell's car a Sunbeam Alpine, not the Ford V8 powered Tiger?

Edit: Googling shows Max's car was a Tiger. I'm thinking now it was the lovely Agent 99 that drove an Alpine. I'm fairly sure there was one in the show somewhere.
