Is Durex what Ambrosio refers to as the darker hard anodized color?

To the best of my knowledge, yes.

It was probably 1984 (plus or minus) when I ordered 28 hole Ambrosio Synthesis Durex tubulars, and I remembered being told that the Durex denoted a hard anodized coating.

Hmmm. In the UK they should have had an advertising campaign where a bike shop mechanic asks the rider if "he needs a little something for the weekend".
