Would you consider my bike pictured a classic or is it too new?
 

Also, just wondering if many people know about this bike? Just curious. FWIW I bought it in the late 80's.

Definitely classic. Handbuilt, lugged steel, going on 20 years old, old tech on it in various ways. I like Chas Roberts.....

Thanks. Wonder why you hardly ever hear of them? I don't think I ever saw another in my area (Pittsburgh), and when riding in Florida (Sarasota area) on big rides, never saw one there either. I think I only met like 4 people that have ever heard of the name Roberts.

Well I am 6'2". The bike is about a 58 cm center to center... maybe a little less hence the long seat post. I find it quite comfortable on long 100 mile rides however, so I feel it must be a good fit, even though I think one would think I may need something larger?

:lol: Yeah, I do use that thing, but not always. It smells like plastic and doesn't hold all that much, but it is pretty cool. Believe it or not it was on there when I bought the bike. I had to replace it twice due to it just wearing out, but you can find them on ebay sometimes. Thanks.

How much does a conversion to new shifters cost?
Did you change out the whole derailer too?
I ahve DT shifters and was wondering on what the cost would be. Not sure if i'd do it certainly "stands out" on group rides these days... :)

My bike is an aluminum Trek from '92 or so. No points for a "classic" but I've NEVER seen anyone else on the group rides I've been on riding a bike as old as mine. So mybe it's a "faux-classic".

Depends what you have already. You could try to find old 8 or 9 speed brifters and then the wheels and derailleur to accomodate. Most shimano SIS derailleurs should work. going with old shimano stuff would be the cheepest way. I think buying new brifters is not worth it unless you are buying the whole group.

They're British built, by hand, and not in very big numbers. Almost all sell on the home market (I don't imagine they do any international marketing at all). I'm surprised to see one in the US at all!

I have Shimano 105 components.
I think I have 7 gears in the back. I can't remember. I'll look into it a little more.
I'm also considering polishing all the components up just for kicks.

My bike came with downtube shifters of course. I may have kept them on there, but... now I am not sure people will remember this... my campy shifters were friction and syncro. They had a little lever for the syncro. They didn't work all that great. I ride the bike a lot and wanted to upgrade that. I changed the following:

1. Ergo shifters with all the extra crap
2. Derailer
3. Chain
4. freewheel (from 7 to an 8)

Other things changed on the bike years ago.

Seat. It came with an old Cinelli swede seat that was pretty heavy and not overly comfortable.
Seat post. Still have the old areo one from the grouppo
Wheels. I had Chorus and went with Record. I kept the brakes and crank as I felt they were pretty sweet. I still think those older Chorus brakes are some of the best ever made.

Those are some nifty looking caps you have on the downtube brazeons. What are they? I am going to eventaully go to brifters, and have never saw those down tube shift braze on caps before.

The Roberts is nice, but looks a tad small, I hope that is a Nitto Tchtronic stem with the extended rise...do you have enough stem inserted in there?

Modern saddles always make the seat post appear extended farther out.


What ever happended to that white Masi Pista from the other thread that we never got any more information on...?

They just came with the Record Carbon Ergo I bought for it like 10 years ago or so. Really don't know what else to tell you. At that time I had that put on. I would do it myself at this point.

The stem is Cinelli and it is a little past the line... I confess. Seems my bike gets taller as I get older. lol The saddle is at least 10 years old, so it isn't too new. Must say, I would buy another one. I really like that carbon flite.

The Masi is still there, but may be a little small? The other bike was a Colnago. I think it is sold though. I was trying to buy it, but may have been a little slow, which was of course my fault. Still searching for a cool track bike. Don't have much in the way of bikes, but when I buy one, I like to look for something interesting.

A very nice bike; and, as mentioned above, Chas Roberts is a very respected framebuilder., although he doesn't do the brazing himself anymore. my brother has been a customer of Roberts for more than 20 years now, and has several custom build frames, up to the latest with the new steel and carbon forks. Still (fillet) brazed, not TIG-ged!
Earlier this year we tried to sell one of his frames on ebay, unfortunately, no bids!

My 8-speed, 1996-era, Shimano 600 setup has cost me about $50 so far:

$5 for Shimano 600 STIs from LBS
$30 for a pair of FSA RD-80 wheels (Craigslist)
$15 for an 8-speed freewheel (fleaBay)
$0 for a Shimano 600 rear mech (Bought a Trek for $40, parted it out for more then $40)
$0 for a 600 crankset (forum member)

Still looking for some sidepull 600s.

A Nitto on this bike? Doesn't an Italian make something that would work? Geez.
