Should I repaint an old Peugeot?

Hello all, just wanted to see what the general consensus was on this.

My wife picked up for free, at a yard sale this summer, a Peugeot Intimidator BMX bike. Nice looking with interesting frame design. However, the bike is in sad shape. I took apart most of the bike last night and there is rust forming at the welds, the wheels and tires are in such bad shape that they must be thrown out, and the chain will not even bend ( ).

So, my winter project (and project for the next two years) is to get this bike cleaned, with new pedals, black wheels and tires, new chains, new handlebars and I am thinking about repainting it (after sanding/grit blasting the old paint off). The only thing holding me up from definitely doing this is that my oldest son loves the color of the bike (he's 4 years old right now, so he will not be able to ride this bike for another 2 years). If it were not for the rust around the welds I would probably not repaint, but with the rust, I feel that it would be more prudent to blast off the paint and see what condition the frame is in.

Any opinions?

Oh and the bike is a sky blue and white color. If I repaint, I was thinking Burnt Orange (my oldest son's favorite color) with jet black forks and chainstays (with Peugeot and my son's name painted on the frame).

Thanks,

Morgolf

The bike is not a collectible, and the finish is extremely rough, so don't hesitate to repaint it in a way that will encourage your son to ride it and to take proper care of it.

Yep. Except it had different wheels. I think that I will redo the paint and put one better pedals, seat and chain.

Thanks.

Cool! I have never seen one of those. I would repaint it for sure. You'll probably never find decals, but there's always a possibility someone might have them. Looks like a cross between a GT and a Torker II.,,,,BD

Oh and the bike is a sky blue and white color. If I repaint, I was thinking Burnt Orange (my oldest son's favorite color) with jet black forks and chainstays (with Peugeot and my son's name painted on the frame).

Cool color combo! To get the Peugeot and name lettering, go to any sign shop and have them cut it on their machine, using spray mask vinyl. Comes in white or yellow. Tell them you want both the positive AND the negative images cut. That way you have several options to painting the lettering on the frame.
If you want to make the art yourself, a sign shop will need the computer image in a vector file format.
Adobe Illustrator is your best bet.
Keep in mind intricate details. If you are NOT using basecoat/clearcoat auto paints, small details are harder to acheive. In case you haven't seen one of my latest lettering adventures, I've attached a picture. All lettering stripes are PAINTED using spray mask and some other fancy masking materials. As well as a LOT of hand cutting!
And then cleared & sanded, and cleared again. That way the surface is perfectly smooth over the artwork.

Have fun with that! Post pics. PM if you got questions.

I'd like to meet the guy that named a bike that looks like that "Intimidator"....or maybe I wouldn't.

I will definitely put a basecoat down after blasting/burnishing (within 1 hour). Heck, I might just oxidize it at 650 F for 15 minutes just to burn off some contaminates before coating.

I was thinking HVLP, but I may not be able to get the equipment, so will have to think of another way. I was thinking of a minimum of three layers. Basecoat/color coat/clear topcoat. May take a while to do, but once done, it should last for a long time. Does this sound reasonable? (FYI I was a coating chemist for 7 years, so I am pretty much hardcore about prep and finish, no orange peel look for me).

Thanks about your thought on the color combo. My oldest son really wants orange, black and green (um...actually green seat post and handlebars) but he may end up looking like he's riding a pumpkin bike.

I'll check out the vinyl tape when doing the detail work and I will definitely PM you if (or should I say when) I have any questions.

Thank you,

Morgolf

Just a thought, maybe you should check with the guys over at www.vintagebmx.com, that bike doesn't strike me as rare or valuable, but you never know. Oh yeah... and put some mags on that sucker, just cause.
