Ok, so who's the lucky guy?

Who lucked out with the 1966 Schwinn Paramount frame???

https://cgi.ebay.com/Schwinn-Paramoun...QQcmdZViewItem

I caught the auction with 4 minutes left, but I have too many bikes as it is, so I passed... kinda regretting it now. So, which one of you is it?

Was that lucky...? Dent in a frame tube, and needing a repaint. By the time it's done up properly, it'll be close to $1K, and still repaired and repainted...

Based on the Reynolds sticker, it looks like it had already been repainted once (those gold bands at the bottom weren't out until sometime in the 70's, if I recall correctly). Also, did anyone else notice the head badge? My 1967 (SN#F711) has a head badge that says "Schwinn Paramount," and this one says "Scwhinn Quality." That makes me think that the '66's badge is not original, but I could be wrong.

FWIW, I paid about $425 for mine (frame, fork, Campy NR headset) a couple years ago with no dents, and paint (that Schwinn yellow that a few years later found its way onto Varsinentals and Lemon Krates) and red decals and pin-striping that was in decent shape except that somebody had somehow splotched it with bleach or something. (It's a beautiful if not period-correct charcoal grey now, thanks to Ed Litton). This one seems to be in somewhat worse condition than mine was at purchase, so the final sale price doesn't sound too outrageous to me. Then again, maybe I overpaid. All I know is that I love riding mine and I love the way it looks. I hope this one gets back on the road, too. It's toonice a frame to just sit on a hook.

The dent is in the fork, and the badge says "Schwinn Chicago".

I don,t understand the high price of this 1964 frame? If you want to restore it to original parts,it would be next to impossible.Could one of you collectors fill me in?What alloy is the frame?

Paramounts from the '60s and '70s were made from Reynolds 531 steel tubing, the best frame building material at that time. They are collectable because they were the best production made bike built in the USA at that time. They were hand built in limited numbers, with probably less than 1000 made in 1966, the real date.

I agree the "Schwinn Chicago" badge is wrong for a '66. I've pictured below a side by side of my original badge (on the right) and my new one. Interestingly, mine is also a June build, just a year earlier.

I paid about $485 and got the entire bike--- but it needed a complete restoration and various bits. All told I put about another $800 into including the paint, pinstriping, converting it to a triple, and wheel building, etc., etc., but I have chrome lugs.

FWIIW, my serial number is F694. Schwinn still had more than twice the number of frames to build in June of 1966 when it built the one listed on ebay.

Thanks Rev,
Limited production, hand built,CHROME!,will do it.Are the bar end shifters on your Schwinn the original look?I wonder why the French bikes of that time frame are not as desirable.
Merry Christmas to you+the congregation

PastorBob.... Nice.... P-15? You must have drop bolts for those Campy brakes huh? Looks like you're running a Nuovo Gran Sport long-cage rear derailleur?

About the the eBay Paramount: I don't think it sold cheaply, if it was Pista then it would be cheap. I've seen complete 70's Nuovo Record Paramounts sell for $600. I personally got a beautiful '72 frame off of eBay for $200 a while back. The 70's Paramount road bikes that fetch over $1000 are in excellent original or nearly restored condition. My restored beauty P-10 got $1600. There is a huge price difference based on condition. It's very expensive to restore these bikes.

Dan, Barend shifters would have been an option by the late '60s early '70s, but probably not in '66. They are "Schwinn Approved," made by Suntour.

M-Theory, Mine is a P-13, which in '66 meant that it had the chrome on the lugs, fork, and stays. All the road Paramounts had eyelets. I made mine a triple and added the Campagnolo Rally RD. Not very "correct," but hey, it pulls me up these NH mountains and hills!

Pastorbob: Are you sure it's a P-13?... the wheelsbase looks a little long for a P-13. Are those 27" clinchers or standard tubulars? I've heard that some P-13's did have eyelets....is there a catalogue that confirms this?

Check out Bob Huffords SLDB https://www.geocities.com/sldatabook/...6569.html#1966, and also take a look at the Dealer Catalogue https://www.geocities.com/sldbdealer/1966/66dlct011.html
In the picture it has a temporary set of clinchers. It now has a set of Campagnolo Record high flange hubs and 27 X 1 clinchers. I have a set of tubular rims and another set of Campy high flange, but I don't see myself riding tubulars.

Pastor Bob, did you build those wheels yourself or find someone to do it?

I have a couple of complete sets of tubular wheel sets, the originals for my 71 Chrome and my 73 Gitane, but I don't particularly want to ride (or buy) tubulars.

What make of 27 x 1 tire are you using?

My not so LBS (40 miles away) shipped the hubs and Aryra rims (an ebay purchase), to their main location (85 miles away), and I picked them up at their third location (55 miles away). I decided to let a pro build the wheels for my Paramount. I hope to teach myself wheel building 101 over the winter. We'll see how it goes.

It just takes time and patience. You can always start over if you mess up. If I can build wheels, anyone can!
