So being relatively young i have always grown up loving my mom's puegeot it is a gorgeous bike. it has however been sitting in the chicken house for a long time. the BB is going to need to be over hauled as is the head set, I don't think i have the tools to take those two things apart especially the BB. and It also needs new spokes in the wheels the rims appear to be aluminum so they are in good shape however the spokes are shot, any idea how to figure out the length i would need i am very interested in trying to learn how to lace my own wheels. i'm also going to replace the brakes and the levers. not to mention of course tires and tubes. i'm trying to get the old girl running with out breaking the bank. any suggestions and comments would be appreciated. thanks a bunch. the bike is rocking simplex deraliurs cotterless cranks. if that helps at all can't wait for your answears.

the easyest way to get the right spokes is to take one out of the rim and go to your local bike shop with it. you will need a spoke wrench to do this , thay only cost a buck or two. If the head set is in good condition and you just want to repack the bearings that shoul be easy. just take the handle bars off and take the top nut off( you need a big wrench ) clean every thing with wd40 and pack every thing with multi purpose grease and put it back together. I'm sue some one here will sugest a good grease to use.
You can replace all the spokes one at a time and then take the wheel to your local shop to have it trued, that seems to be the least money way. Check the C&V friendly thread for a shop in your area.
Redoing the crank and bottum bracket isnt too complicated but may require a couple special tools and wrenches. If you are only going to do this one time it may be cheaper to have a shop do it than buy all the tools.

To overhaul the bottom bracket you will need an appropriate crank puller, the correct wrenches for your lockring and adjustable cup, and two dozen new 1/4" ball bearings. If the BB is in decent shape, do not attempt to pull the fixed (drive-side) cup.

Replace the original brake pads with KoolStops, and replace the brake cables and housings. This should improve braking performance noticeably.

and my dyslexia, let me see if i can manage these photos i just took. humm still working on that however i have a problem no were on the bike does it have a serial number or model name that i can find maybe i'm just not looking in the right spot. the only writing on it besides made in france is "carde Allege" it's on a decal I can't find a translation i tried babel fish and googled it. any ideas i've taken the tension off the deraliurs and sprayed them down with penetrating oil. So far the simplex deraliurs are looking a little beat up, I do however have a set of deraliurs off of my Miyata a Sun Tour BL in the front and a Sun Tour Vg-T Lux in the back. I'm assuming that if the simplex parts are shot i can sub in the sun tours with out too much trouble.

If it 27" rims, which I would suspect it is and the Helocomatic hubs 297's will be
the ones you need. I keep a few spares for my commuter cuz they have a
tendancy to snap on the chainwheel side :eek:

so while i'm working on this beast should i track down another 5 speed hub and swap it out? since the hubs are inclined to break spokes.

The wheels are steel right? You should try and get an aluminum wheelset if you can afford to. You ought to be able to score a cheap set by posting a wanted add on craigslist. Lots of folks are going to 700c on thier fixed gear conversions, it shouldn't be too hard to find some 27" aluminum wheels for what you would spend on spokes.

I often commute on a 1970 UO-8, upgraded with aluminum rims, aluminum crankset, 6-speed "ultra" freewheel, and KoolStop brakepads.

That Peugeot looks like the one I have with the exception of mine being an earlier version and white, with steel neurvo crank set, and steel Rigida rims/normandy high flange quick release rims, and leather seat, (not brooks), stainless fenders, rack, gen light, I am only missing the upper lens for the rear tail lt., I need to assemble it as I just finished touching up the frame paint along with new grease, tune and cables. For an old school steel bike it is a very well put together bike for street duty, I have another female version blue frame in very good condition and some other simplex, mafac parts as well if anyone needs some French parts, I have another 70's bike called a Gitane Gran Luxe, French (green), very close to the Peugeot and same components, if not the same bike, not the Tour De France version, just steel and unbrakable........The Peugeot and Gitane are for sale if anyone is interested email me Jeff: thezman70@hotmail.com.
