Cecil Behringer on eBay
 

I hope I'm not queering anyone's pitch by starting this thread, but from what I can gather, this is a bike which deserves to be acquired and treasured by the right rider, and since it's listed in a weird place on eBay, some of you will probably miss it:

It's got an interesting mix of components (Campy crankset, Sunshine hubs, Suntour Superbe derailleurs and brakes), and obviously spent a bunch of years hanging in a garage before going through an estate sale ... and the seller obviously has no clue of what they've got.

The componentry led me to do a little digging, and I gather that Cecil Behringer was an innovator and longtime frame builder in Minnesota who is revered in some circles as a god. He collaborated with Pino Moroni (he of Eddy Merckx "The Hour" bike fame) in working on the use of titanium in bikebuilding back in the 60's and 70's. LOL...but the two that have bid know what it is...I know both of them.

Yup; my favorite line in the listing was, "The bike is made of highly efficient proffessional (sic) bicycle companies."

This bike is a good example of an average or worse auction presentation.

sold for just a click over 200.!

Perhaps the small size contributed to the poor showing.

the Pista in at CR is to die for! Wow! I am by no means a fixie head but the clean look of a Pista can be so elegant.

Also early superbe hub sometimes came with sunshine skewers (i have a pair), so those could very well be superbe hubs as well.

If that's anywhere near average, the state of education is even worse than I feared!! :eek: "Restauration"?

It would be really hard to make up that many misspellings and half-malapropisms unless you were doing it deliberately, perhaps as some kind of experiment for a psychology or marketing class. I've read that some ebay sellers deliberately try to seem dumb. (Notice that he spelled "restoration" correctly in the next line?) They think bidders feel safer buying from somebody they think is too dumb to scam them. This looks like one of those sellers!

If the poor spelling was a tactic, then it did not work.

Parted out this bike would yield double or more than what it sold for including the shipping.

Superleggero seat post, $80. or more used even, to start with. And from a builder with a low volume and solid reputation.

Hopefully he packages the bike better than he spells. Somehow I doubt it though.

Kind of a nasty dent on the downtube, though-

I imagine the seller's poor feedback had a lot to do with the low bids too.

The poor feedback, and the trust issue. I thought about bidding to cherry-pick a couple of parts and flip the rest, but it bugged me that the description claimed that the bike was in good shape, and the disclosure of that big downtube ding only came later, and then only in a picture. Trust level is huge on eBay. I'm by no means a big user, but I've already had a couple of experiences with items being overdescribed, or underdisclosed, particularly by the "drop it off, we sell it for you" shops. The result - and I think we saw it in this auction - was bidder shyness.

I realize this post is a few years old, but I am trying to locate a Behringer Bike. Cecil was my grandfather and I woud like to find one of these bikes. We have one in the family but I would like one for myself. Does anyone know where, how, or who I can get one from?

1. Save a search on ebay, they will notify you for six months. Be sure to save a couple of searches with common misspellings as well.

2. Save a search on one of the Craigs List search engines. Just be prepared, most Craigs List sellers have zero interest in shipping a bike, and the best deals go really fast.

It would be a much better idea to start a new thread, especially as this one is, as you note, old. It's also essentially a different topic, and potentially helpful people may not read all the way down to your query. Plus, it's just plain aggravating. Is it really that hard to start a new thread that's more specific, as well as current?

I have a Behringer around 58cm(23inches) that is a mix of Dura Ace Ex and Campagnolo record. I am considering selling it - most likely on Ebay. Let me know if you are still interested as I might post it soon...

Cecil Behringer was a metallurgist who consulted for Shimano and Campagnolo
 

I have just decided to sell my Behringer. I had it built in the mid 1970s and had numerous meetings with Cecil. At that time, I lived in St Cloud, MN. Since its been suspended upside down in my garages for at least 30 years, I really haven't had it evaluated. If you're interested, I will dust it off and shoot some pictures.
