Reverborama,

I can't get over the gloss on that paint!

My wife has kept her Conti inside since she got it in the 70's. Even though its never been wet, hardly been ridden, and never left out overnight, it still doesn't shine like yours.

Last fall I lubed up the bearings and then slipped on an alloy wheelset and took it out to play with those big shifters:

That's very nice. I'm glad to see that some people appreciated the bomb-proofness of these old flash welded frames.

I rebuilt a Varsity using a Truvativ BB adapter and Shimano Sora double. The wheels use the original Schwinn approved hubs and some Alex 27" rims that I got from Nashbar for $9.95 each. The rear dérailleur is a NOS Suntour GTV. The front is a NOS Huret -- most of the Schwinn approved dérailleurs were made by Huret. My Varsity frame is much smaller than yours. After the rebuild it came in at 29 pounds. The alloy wheels completly transform the way the bike rides and stops.

I doubt that you will find an alloy seat post anywhere. Older BMX bikes use the same diameter post, but they are all made of steel -- for obvious reasons. The only way to get an alloy post for one of these bikes, is to have one made at a machine shop.

I scrapped the suicide levers, and recently bought a pair or of cyclo-cross interrupter levers. When I get them mounted, I'll post some pics.

Heheh -- busted. I saw a '70 Conti at that guy's house where I bought the Super Sport last month, and I figured since I was putting older downtube decals on it anyway, what the heck..

Only they came minus the olympic rings--- well at least in '62 that was the case. Any one want to guess which is the Paramount and which is the Continental? No HINTS, please! :p

I still have (and ride) the blue Continental that I bought new in the Spring of 74. It rides great! I've always treated it well, and it's in great shape. I'll try to snap a photo.

Silversmith- I dig the tractor, man... my kind of ride : )

The photo at that URL (http://home.comcast.net/~mswantak/ws...7/site1513.jpg) is no longer there. Not unusual since the post is nearly two years old.
