appropriate saddle for late 1950s/early 1960s Italian?
 

Anyone know offhand what a an appropriate saddle vintage-wise for a late 1950s/early 1960s Italian bike would be? I'm not sure what year the Cinelli Unicanitor was introduced, but that was my first reaction.

A recent thread on the CR list indicates '59 was the year for the introduction of the Unicanitor. The Cinelli covered version didn't arrive until the late '60's/early '70's.

Brooks always works.

regarding the unicanitor CR thread; it mentioned that the 1959 unicanitor was the one designed to work with their own special seatpost.. it wasn't until '63 that they arrived at the more standard and now familiar design

I'm not 100% sure of the vintage of the bike I'm working on... I'm /pretty/ sure it's post-1960, but not 100% yet (nor am I sure that I ever will be...) Unicanitor sounds like a pretty good option, though.

I think that 1950's /60's Italia saddles were made by Brooks? Certainly, the frame components appear to be Brooks' - does anyone have more information about this? A guy, just removed from New York to San Diego, offered me one of these saddles (A.17) only a few weeeks ago - 'NOS, but shop-soiled' (VERY shop-soiled, judging by the photos) - which, at $225.00, seemed rather expensive. It may still be available, if you're interested.
I've recently replicated six or seven of these Italia saddles for a customer in New York, and could make one for you, if you wished.

A plastic Unicanitor would be right enough if you ask me. Like somebody else mentioned the early ones are different and have a special post. But if it's not a concourse type resto, a 60's or 70's model and Campy post would not be out of line. I'm building up an early 60's Legnano Roma and will go with a butchered Brooks Pro. I'd prefer the look of a Uncanitor, but just dont find them that comfortable. I can get used to them but only if I ride them only. I can't go back and forth between them and saddles with less crown. Too bad cuz they are a great looking saddle.
