Stem Question...

This site says this stem has a 22.2mm clamp. Can this be right? I thought handlebars go from 25.4 to 26.4 with 26 being the standard. It's not the quill width, which is: .833 (21.1)

Anyone know of any other tall .833 (21.1) size stems?

Here's a tall .833" stem on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NOS-SCHWINN-STEM...QQcmdZViewItem

I believe the description regarding the stem you linked to is a misprint.........I found a very nice SR stem a while back on ebay that's quite tall and also has the short forward extension I was looking for. I suspect all the .833" stems you're going to find will have a 25.4mm clamp diameter. The way I found the .833" SR stem I bought on ebay was that I noticed a more distinctive than is typical ridge near the top of the quill, apparently where the stem had been machined down from the standard 22.2mm size during manufacturing. The seller apparently didn't notice it was an .833" stem, there was no mention of it in the description-

I went out and measured 4 old Schwinn .833 stems today and their bars. The bars are all 25.4's.

22.2 is, I believe, an old English size. I had a set of chrome bars and stem on a 60's Raleigh which had no bulge in the centre of the bars. I don't recall the measurement, but it was considerably smaller than 25.4

Just checked on Sheldons site, and the bars I had were probably 23.8! 22.2 is the BMX handlebar standard, and older MTB's had them too. I think that if you buy ape hangers and so on, they tend to come in this size. It looks like .883 is also the BMX standard. Just goes to show there's more out there than we think! See here for details.

For what it's worth:
22.2mm = 7/8"
23.8mm = 15/16"
25.4mm = 1"
