Guerciotti

OK, can anyone help me with these two items....ebay bike aluminum Guerciotti, and it has Campagnola Chorus componentry, which looks practically new. Any opinions on the bike, and the componentry would be appreciated, thanks.

Pics?

Is it an "ALAN" Guerciotti - aluminum tubes and aluminum lugs?

Frame made by Alan, Awesome components which go for FAR less than record for probably little performance difference.

yes, it was confirmed that it was an ALAN frame...I'm sure people are waiting in the grass to pounce on this, but we shall see.....I haven't figured out the image thing yet.

Can't look at an ebay link here at work, but no worries from me - I have one. For reference, I paid $300 for a "like new" Guerciotti ALAN, decked out in Dura Ace and a Specialized triple crank. It is light and fast, and I think it is pretty.

Here's what Sheldon's site says about them:

ALAN
An early attempt at aluminum. Reliability should be considered. The bike still lives on today in its cyclocross version as either Alan or Guerciotti aluminum. The Alan frames were very attractive and very light. They featured some interesting engraving on the lugs. Unlike today's modern aluminum, these have a soft ride. Many enjoy riding these, especially lightweight or particularly smooth riders. It was common to deck out an Alan with special lightweight trick components. For a nice N.R. Alan road model figure perhaps $650. S.R. is probably more appropriate, perhaps worth $750. With some correct early lightweight goodies perhaps maybe more.

Mine looks like this:

pretty close to what this one looks like, minus the saddle and the peddles, but would put those on myself anyway....

Cool - I'll put this auction on my "watch" list. Not to bid on - I'm interested in seeing if I paid too much.....

I remember those alum Gurches. They were actually kinda common when I was in college in the mid-80s. I was at the U of Central Fla in Orlando and after I gave up on football helped form a small bike club. At that time a company called 10 Speed Drive was importing Guerciotti and they were HQed in Melbourne which is on the Atlantic Coast a bit SE of Orlando. Local dealers could get them for a good deal and there were, as best I can recall, 3-4 or perhaps few more aluminum Gurch riders in a club that never got over 20 riders.

At one point I was thinking about getting one for my girlfriend (now wife) but for whatever reason she wasn't into them. I know Sheldon warns about reliability but I never saw or head of one fail and I can recall a few strong riders putting alot of miles on them.

Funny thing is after UCF I went to U of Florida (41-14 :) ) which isn't very far north of Orlando and don't recall seeing many there at all. Of course the eBay one is in Cal. Wonder who distributed them there?

OK, one more simple question...I know truly fitting is impossible unless you are on the bike...but I am 5'8", and this bike is 52cm...am I "in the ballpark", or do I need to go up? I know it also depends on the brand, compact geometry on some, etc., but all the different sizes for my 5'8", 200 pound frame is making my head spin...

Really depends more on your inseam. I am 5'9" with 29" inseam and ride 52 comfortably. But I also ride a 53, 54, 55, and 56. It's a matter of finding the right stem, and making your adjustment as much as anything. I think you would be fine.

bigbossman 02-08-07 11:59 PM

You're in the ballpark. I'm 5'11" with a 30" inseam, and the 56cm ALAN I have fits me well.
