Pics of My "New" Bar-Ends Bling!

I have a set of NOS Suntour friction shifters that have been sitting around for some time. I don't really care for down-tubes , but I do like bar-ends. What to do? I ordered a set of bar-end pods from Rivendell. https://www.rivbike.com/webalog/shift...urs/17068.html

Now I have bling-tastic bar-ends!

I love it!

I really like the idea of being able to tension them while riding, rather than stopping to take out a screwdriver.

I was riding a Giant a few years back with indexed downtube shifters. I wonder if those would have worked with that system....

Be sure to post pics when you get them mounted. Suntour rocks!

Looks nice! I have a set of 9 speed indexed/friction Dura Ace bar cons on my cross bike and I really like them. I have a set of Campagnolo C-Record Retro Friction shifters that I was thinking would be good with the Rivendell pods, but I am not sure if the Campy shifters will work with them, is there any info about compatability in the instructions?

Thanks

I believe they're friction only. The inside is smooth, there's no slot or raised edge for an sis shifter to work against, right?

There's nothing on the instruction sheet about shifter brand compatibility. I suggest that you contact the folks at Rivendell and ask. They seem like nice, helpful people.

This is what the pods look like with the shifters removed.

It seems to me that any downtube shifter that fits a standard Campy-style braze on should work. You don't have to buy those from Rivendell if you've got some worn out Shimano bar end shifters. Down tube shifters should bolt right on. I've got a pair that I'm saving to use with second generation Simplex Retrofrictions if I can find a set for a decent price.

Ahhhhhh. I recall wrong. That's cool, I guess they could take an indexing shifter, right? I mean, what's the difference between that square bolt and a frame braze-on? Or am I thinking incorrectly?

Check this out.

These shifters are 3X7-speed thumb shifters moved to the ends of a moustache bar. Mounted sideways like they are they shift just like real bar-end shifters except they hang off the side which I actually like better as I can "palm" the levers instead of needing to use my arthritic fingers. There index or friction shift and when friction is used it's easily adjusted just like down tube shifters. I have $5 invested in both shifters.

The campy shifters I have are friction only, they are fairly rare and are the C-Record "doppler" retro-friction model.

From your pics it does indeed look like they would work.

thanks

Shimano dt indexing shifters come with a backing plate that contains the alignment tab the indexing ratchet works against so, if you mount the backing plate on these adapters, the shifters should index just fine. I have a set of Shimano 7-speed indexing dt shifters mounted on Kelly take-Offs and the instalation is nearly identical. BTW, if you have curved backing plates (made for "standard diameter" steel frames) you may have to grind the back of the plates flat to use them. It's not a difficult job.

I did just the opposite and tirned bar end shifters into thumb shifters.

I like them, and it's cheap considering it's from Rivendell.

I picked up a set of those bar-end pods from Rivendell awhile back, but haven't installed them yet. Still, in quickly looking through my box of shifters, it seemed that I'm going to have trouble finding a shifter that would line up correctly with the cable opening on the pod. I tried the SunTour downtube ratchets that are equivalent to SunTour barcons, but the shifter cable would have to make a bit of a jog left from shifter to pod that would seriously interfere with performance. For those of you who've tried these pods, which levers have worked?
