Austro-Daimler SLE

When it rains, it pours....

In exchange for work done (and work yet to be done!) on a friend's bike, I was given a mostly complete Austro-Daimler SLE frameset. Tubing looks to be all 531, with Weinmann sidepull calipers featuring cool little adjustment knobs. The stem is marked "GB", and the bars have a cyclist logo on the left side and a globe on the right. Shifters and derailluers are Huret, crank is Stronglight, and the top tube cable clamps are marked with a "S" in a what looks like a starburst.

This looks pretty close in color/trim, but the crank is different:

I was going to build this out for myself until the Italian frame I posted about elsewhere came to my attention. Now, I'm not sure what to do with it, but it'll probably get built out as a 6 speed and sold off to finance the Italian (should I acquire it).

A few pics:

The SLD is in more capable hands now. Uh, I'll trade you those rear dropout micro adjusters for the ones on the Paramount.

Hey Bigbossman,

The first real bike I ever bought was that exact AD model in 1977. I remember it as a wonderful bike.

It now sits in my brother's garage. I sometimes feel like taking it back and making it roadworthy, but I don't know exactly why. I've got too many bikes already.

I found an AD Inter-10, full 531 as well, in much worse condition which I'll eventually recondition. I did get a chance to ride it a bit, however, and it glides over the pavement. The SLE may have different geometry, but it looks similar: longish chainstays and long fork rake. It would give you a much different ride than the Italian frame, which I assume is a race geometry. But you probably already know that. From what I've seen of your posts, you seem to prefer bikes with race geometries, so maybe it's not your cup of tea. But if you want to build up a nice day tourer, this frame would work well for that (provided you find some handlebar water cages!). The other option would to sell the frame alone as a fixie candidate. With no braze-ons, it's a super clean frame. Google Austro Daimler and Puch and you'll find a number of fixies built on these frames.

I found another one of those (a Taiwan-made Motobecane job), but it's too big for you East Hill. I didn't have the nerve to send you pictures of another unridable one.

And how come I don't get a chance at it?

Seriously though - let me know if you'd BF it...I need a dark blue machine to put my buckskin-colored suede bar tape on...

Oh, all right, then. At least you were thinking of me .

I love the handlebars with the cyclist on them.

Me, too. I'm thinking of moving them over to the Italian Job, if they polish out nice. Then again, I have a nice Cinelli/3ttt bar/stem combo not doing anything.....

The crank in the brochure picture is a Nervar Star; I suspect Steyr-Daimler-Puch varied cranks from model to model or from year to year, according to price and availability.

It looks like a great bike to me, but then I have a thing for Austrian bikes.
