The "Beater" Peugeot P8 Lives! and a big thanks to the Forum.

Not a Ride for the Velo Illuminati to fawn over, It's yet another 80's Peugeot thread!

This is my winter project, hope the pictures work. Peugeot P8, year, somewhere between '81 and '86 I guess. It's finished, aside from a set of Continential Ultra Sports and some alloy bars (when I find them). I've been riding a 45lb+ Schwinn Conti, and a 35lb Rampar. Riding the Peugeot is like walking out doors on the first warm morning of Spring.

I do have "Real" pedals for it, but I'm going to wait for all the ice to melt before I learn how to ride with them.

Got to thank the terrific forum members who helped me out with this.

Rob (Cmdr) for the Maillard freewheel tool.
John (Bigbossman) for the Sugino Crankset and
Kurt (Cudak888) For the Maillard lock ring

Thanks Guys!

Hey, no CV is a beater. They just have an advanced patina. The snow is melting. Ride on!

lol,

It ...Started out to be a beater, but after I got the paint touched up....I'm going to be as overprotective as heck. So now,"beater" is sort of a joke.

Just a word of warning about those Conti Ultrasports you are thinking about getting- I've got one of my rear wheel and until they get a few miles on them they are a pure pain in the ass to get on and off the wheel. Not impossible, but the first time will make you want to throw them across the room.

You're moving up in the world - MUCH nicer than the green sled! Glad to see those cranks are still working for a living. Nothing sadder than an idle crank.....

You need some alloy bars? I've got some older ones, meaning narrow..... they liked little bars back in "the day". They won't be pretty, but they'll be straight and alloy. PM me if you want one for the price of postage - although I gotta tell you bars should be pretty easy to find locally, and probably for less than the postage from me would cost...

That may be a characteristic of Continental tires in general. I have to use tire levers on BOTH beads of my Ultra2000s when putting them on my Campagnolo Omega rims, which I suspect is probably a worst-case large outer diameter rim / small inner diameter tire bead scenario.

Aaron, good to see you're getting up to speed. Hauling 30 to 40 pounds of steel through the snow has got to be a pain. Now you can fleetly dodge falling icicles on this sleek new -er bicycle. Have fun.

I have always been a "Raleigh" man but I found an old Peugeot at the local tip minus wheels..... so I thought why not? It has a sticker on the bottom bracket which starts P10 so that is what I am thinking it is, the serial number suggests its an 1983 model. All those strange French bits came apart no problem for cleaning greasing and rebuilding, new cables and brake blocks and 2 cheap wheels and 700x23 Michelins and the thing is a flyer, even the Simplex worked ok but I had a nice clean Suntour sitting there so I wacked that on.... just in case. It is so fun to ride, very responsive and smooth, the paint is terrible and I am now wishing I'd sorted that out when I had it in bits but quite honestly I didn't think it would turn out as well as it did......Viva La France!!!!

Thanks guys,
I'm completely happy so far, not a big surprise, but it rides like the Peugeot P6 I rode when I was a kid.

I recently struggled with the same rim/tire combination. The first wasn't too bad, but the second nearly had my thumbs rubbed raw from 20 minutes of wrestling with it.

btw - nice job with the bike redneckwes.

Just as well that you put the SunTour on. Simplex plastic jockeys do not age well, and you'd have been looking for replacements within the first 200 miles.

What Raleigh? Z has a soft spot in his heart (and head) for Raleighs.

yeah, but the Pug is your baby. and if it comes down to it, you could carry the Raleigh around with you and it could be your new "beater" to beat anyone who comes to close to the Pug....

lmao,
When I'm done with it, the Raleigh is gonna look better than the Pug does! It'll weigh about twice as much as the Pug though!

John,
Thanks for the offer! I'm going to dig around and see what I can come up with, lately, it seems all I can find are boat anchor steel bars.

[You need some alloy bars? I've got some older ones, meaning narrow..... they liked little bars back in "the day". They won't be pretty, but they'll be straight and alloy. PM me if you want one for the price of postage - although I gotta tell you bars should be pretty easy to find locally, and probably for less than the postage from me would cost... [/QUOTE]

Thanks for the advice Zorra, it still has the front simplex on which I am afraid to remove until I find a suitable replacement as the plastic downtube fitting band looks so brittle it would snap if I touched it! A nice shiney Suntour front mech of Ebay should do the trick.

Cheers

BD,

The French can't do a lot of things. But they seemed to excel at building Bikes.

I wonder if any of my distant cousins ever worked for Peugeot (or Motobecane, or Gitane) ??

One last post in the thread, The Continential Ultra-Sports came from Nashbar today, In case anyone wonders these Conti's at least are no longer German production. These were marked "Made In Thailand" Should work fine though.
