1991 Trek 400?

I've been scouring craigslist for a beater bike that I can eventually turn into a fixie and I stumbled across a 1991 trek 400 in decent shape. I searched the forums and found a little information about them but wasn't able to get anything specific. The guy is asking 225 and I'm pretty sure I could talk him down to 200. Is this a decent price for this bike? I'm still new at the whole pricing vintage bikes and could use any help at all. From what I understand everything is original. Heres a picture of it. Thanks.

Looks stock which puts it on the low end. Go lower or hold out for something better, a model from the early to mid-eighties.

nice bike. Very hard to put a value on bikes of that vintage. Not old enough to be all that interesting or rare. But new enough to be a more useful bike for most riders. I regularly see bikes like that sell for anywhere from $25 to $250. Should you wait until you find a $25 one? Depends on what your stock of luck and time is like. Also makes a HUGE difference where you are located.

Things of value to you in buying a used bike so that you don't have to replace them include: tires and tubes, cables/housings, brake pads, bar tape. If these are not new or in very good shape, you need to remember to include replacement or depreciated value in your cost evaluation.

The 400 was really at the bottom of Trek's road bike line. It was a decent bike but certainly nothing special. The frame and fork are double butted Cr-Mo which is a plus but the components were pretty low-line. It had a Sun Tour Accushift drivetrain which is really obsolete now and used a 7-speed freewheel. I would guess it cost about $300 - $350 brand new.

If all of the components are in good shape AND the frame is the right size (that's a big consideration...) I wouldn't pay more than about $150. If any of the parts need to be replaced, the offer just went down.
