I screwed up right?

So I was taking my chain off to clean it up, and turned the rivet popping tool a half turn to far and the rivet came all the way out...time to buy a new chain right? UGHHHHHHHHHH. Is there anything I can do?

I do this all the time. Just takes some patience, a pair of nice pliers, and some patience, and some more patience, and you can get it lined up and "attached" enough to carefully get the chain tool lined up and pressure on, then you are golden.

What evwxxx said ... it's a pain in the butt, but you'll get it in there. Just be ready to curse a lot, and do it over a surface on which it will be easy to find the rivet when it pops out of the pliers and flies across the room. It'll do that a lot. I know.

That chain was two links too long anyways right?

It can be put back though. It might take 45 minutes, but it can be fixed.

I'll repeat; get a master link. a lot easier, and if you take your chain off regularly, a lot easier to do that also.
Any bikes I ride regularly have links on them for just those reasons.

I buy masterlinks several at a time and keep them in the tool box (I keep one in my seat bag for on the road repairs, as well). I have spent too many hours trying to push a pin back in.

Try holding the pin in position with needlenose pliers or tweezers, and crank it back down with the chain tool. - aka what evwxxx said

I buy new chains that have these "master links", but I always remove that section of chain. I probably have six or seven of them down in the shop.

Practice makes perfect, Ive gotten to the point where I know just when to stop turning so the pin doesnt pop! LOL! The links do make it easier though if you lack the patience to do it the "old school" way Heck! I remember doing the whole job with a hammer, a piece of tube, and a hole punch!

that why...

...you always keep the excess links when you size a new chain. Plus, on your 25th chain, you put all the extras together and "ya got yerself a new un!" (this tip brought to you courtesy of Team Lowbucks)

5 1/2 turns for a 3/8 chain with my tool
I learned from my mistakes. I paid extra attention when I added a link to my chain tonight.
It never hurts to scream a little (when no one's around)

When I think I'm almost, but not quite, to the perfect spot I back the tool out and see if the chain will pop apart. If not, I screw the tool back in and push the pin just a hair more. Usually after about three tries the chain comes apart and the pin stays in the inside plate. With a little practice this method now works quite well for me.

I'll use a master link if I have one handy, and the bike I'm working on is mine.

Yes, I've also popped a few pins out too far.

As mentioned by other posters, getting that loose pin back in is a pain in the ass, but doable.
