Wheel build (Old Hub)

I have this gimpeme (sp) hub.

And i want to build a wheel for my road bike. The thing is the cheapest rim i found was 45eu, and the build + spokes is 45 eu. Thats almost 100eu for a really cheap wheel.

And i lost the cone nuts and bearings for the hub too, i had them all in one bag, and then lost the bag. I have one bearing in my pocket, but i don't think the lbs can find me another set of cone nuts.

I could find a used wheel with a ok rim, but then thats 45 eu for a HORRIBLE wheel...

Is it time to put a wheel together then pay for truing and tensioning?

The hub wasn't great to begin with, and now that half of it is missing, I wouldn't bother. In your shoes I would keep an eye out for a used wheel in decent shape and forget about throwing money at the Gipiemme project.

In Finland it will be another 400 years before i find a rear wheel for sale (used).

And i can't find anyone selling threaded wheels, hubs yeah, wheels no.

You folks in Finland have Ebay? That'd be my bet, although shipping for a wheel won't be cheap. Anyway, I imagine that if it's hard to find a wheel in your neigborhood, finding cones for a Gipiemme hub will be just about impossible. I live in a very good area for vintage stuff, and I haven't the slightest idea where to find Gipiemme spares. Again, Ebay may well be your best -- not to say only -- bet.

Good luck!

No ebay here.

About the cone nuts. I found a place that they SAID they had them, cause i showed the nut, and they said yeah. But i lost it so i cant go back and get them. 5eu for both. and then 6 eu for a bunch of bearings.

If i find that bag!!!! im gona go to this used bike store and get a wheel for like 10eu and just take the rim...

WERE IS MY BAG. oh man im going nuts. (edit: no pun)

Good luck on finding your bag.

If you find a digital camera and an old rusty Campagnolo front derailleur when you find it, they are mine... Those are the items I can't find, and I'm assuming they must have caught a flight to Finland to join your lost bag. :D

Your nut bag?!?!? :D

Yeah, but i can't ship anything, i have had this problem before, i can't pay overseas. I might ask some one to pay...

i found these... (in German)

Why can you not get paypal? Or transfer money through your bank? But seriously though, I bet a LOT of old bike shops in finland have wheels lying around. You might have to do some digging, but I´m sure they´re out there. There are some finnish guys on the FG/SS forum, maybe one of them could help?

I haven't tried this, but seems like the one Gipiemme hub I stripped looked like any one of many Campy knock-offs. Could he get some cones and locknuts from, say, a Miche, Galli or Ofmega/Avocet hub and call it a day? (I'm sure that real Campy uses prorietary/different tpi threading, right?) Shipping on those little bits should be cheap wherever they come from.

My experience -- and this is all from a long time ago, BTW, so nobody sue me -- was that some Gipiemme was exactly like Campy and some wasn't, and I could never see rhyme or reason to it. To be sure, our fellow would have to ship his remaining hub bits to the prospective seller of parts to see if the replacement bits fit.

All told, I stand by my original opinion: half a Gipiemme hub isn't worth horse spit, and spending good money to first repair it and then have it built into a wheel is silly. YMM, as always, V. :)

I can help you out with a hub, probably. As long as you're not looking for a track hub. PM me, and we can talk about what you need. I probably have something you can have for nothing.

diff_lock2 04-02-07 06:41 PM

guys (and gals),----------- i just found the nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow I'm going to the store to get a new pair of cone nuts and bearings!!!!!!

Sammyboy, if my hub doesn't work out, ill be sure to contact you, thanks for the offer though!

Now all i need is a 36h 700c rim. I will stop by (again) to the used bike store, last time i didn't see anything worth it...
