quicksilver the movie
Has anyone seen this movie ? Kevin Bacon 1985? How many bikes can you id and how about those stunts. Why did I never hear of this movie before today?

kurt can I.D. some, but I think bacon is riding a competition and the dude at the beginning is riding a grand prix... I haven't tried to pause the movie or anything.

'84 Raleigh USA machines, for the most part.
Casey's is most obviously an fixied/singlespeeded (depending on the scene) '84 Comp, sometimes decked out with a straight blade trick fork as most obvious in some scenes. Get a close look at the reverse-mounted brake with a dissapearing brake cable in the thrift shop window sillouette scene. Messenger in the opening scenes rides a stock '84 Grand Prix. One fixie rider in the opening titles has what appears to be a 1985 Super Course.
Voodoo has what I believe is a Nottingham-built '83 machine which sports the same build qualities (Raleigh logos on seatstay caps, etc.) and chromed rear trangle, front fork and headtube as the Japanese '84s, but features translucent green paint. I've never seen this model in a catalogue, or even heard of a forum member owning one - but a semi-regular at the LBS owns one with semi-translucent burnt orange metallic. Doesn't have any name on the frame. As for Voodoo's example in the movie, we get to see far too little of it. All I can make out is an Ofmega or SR copy aero-type crankset - most likely the Ofmega, considering the '84 Raleigh Prestige used the high-polish Ofmega over the SR.
Lots of cheapo machines were used for the "extras." Couldn't even figure out what most of them were.

I saw it when it came out, and the scar is still there. Think "Footloose" ... uhhh, with bikes. From the New York Times review:

The story kind of lacked focus. With dvd you can pick scenes for bikes. The young girl is the mom on a sitcom now. Why was louie anderson there? It was a date movie when it came out I think. Now its classic bikes before thay were classic

On that note, I was actually thinking of starting a new thread, what with The Flying Scotsman opening (in some places) tomorrow (5/4). What's the best bike movie of all time? Not that I've seen a lot. Of course Breaking Away makes the list; despite cheesiness it's got some good scenes. But my personal vote for best bike movie of all time goes to ...(the envelope please) The Triplets of Belleville. If you haven't seen it, rent it tonight

I went to a preview for Flying Scotsman (everyone was an urban bike hipster in the audience including myself), it was boring story-wise but the bikes in it are interesting. Lots of vintage 5-6 speed bikes in it and a genuinely painful looking homemade track bike.
And don't even talk smack about Quicksilver, that last scene with Bacon outrunning the old Detroit car on his bike is very entertaining.

In the UK, that movie is Belleville Rendezvous. I don't know that I'd call it a cycling film, but it's great.

I think I found a translucent green raleigh. It's $200, lets see if I can trade one of my $2 bikes for it. I traded one of my $.50 ers for my $100 peugeot.

Took a closer look today. It''s dirty and dosent glow like the one in the movie but the color looks right. It is set up with shimano 105 stuff and is a taiwon make. 55cm

So why can't they make a remake of the movie "Quicksilver"? It seems like every other movie nowadays are being remade. Matt Damon can star in it this time!

The movie's almost unwatchable.If we were in the fixed gear forum,the movie would be a stranger to no one.A cult fav.among young dudes,a nephew of mine associates that movie with fixies.It's no coincidence
