vintage Casati?

Any idea what this will go for?

Are Casati's nice bikes?

cyclotoine 05-08-07 04:46 PM

nope, but I wouldn't pay more than $300 for it.. Well that is the max value in my opinion. I personally wouldn't pay more than $300 CND to have it delivered to me door.

Old Fat Guy 05-08-07 04:54 PM

I'm guessing it won't sell at all because it won't make the reserve. Sheldon Brown has a little bit of info on them:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/vrbn-a-f.html#casati

I guess they made great bikes and crappy bikes. We sure won't be able to tell which this is from the listing.
Lousy pictures, poor description, incorrect cabling, mix of components... if I were selling it I would link to lots of pictures showing everything in detail. Caveat emptor.

We'll know for sure in 6 days.

This one's fishy ... same bike listed on the San Francisco Craigslist for $600, same photos:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/323123275.html

The lister is in Bakersfield.

Maybe he talked the Craigslist seller down and is hoping to flip it for quick bucks, but my alarm system has been officially triggered.

Rammer 05-08-07 05:20 PM

I had seen the link to Sheldon Brown's site. With the poor description/pictures and the zero feedback seller, I wondered if this was potentially a bargain find. Of course taking a gamble in Vegas may have better odds.

I saw the Bakerfield listing. I'm guessing he's not received a $600 offer locally.

I think it's the same guy. I would give it a pass. There are better bikes out there at reasonable prices. Patience is rewarded.

Hey, don't be badmouthing Casati's. But Aelle is not a top Columbus tubing, and the listing just ain't that great, so I'm gonna be in that $300 bucket, too.

jjvw 05-08-07 11:53 PM

Bent fork or wide agle lens?

old and new 05-09-07 12:10 AM

That could be a mid-80's bike, actually, the first I'd seen an Aelle tubing bike was 87-88 here in the United States. It may have appeared earlier in the Euro. market.Casati is a fine company, they've come and gone here in the states, they've had their share of success in the race circuit in Europe and have once again been imported, same family-owned firm.Alle was the replacement for Cromor,an alloy NOT hi-tens.It IS a seamed-tubing.If the bike requires not much work or parts,it's a $200 bike if you like it,I don't,it's WAY big.I don't focus on any bikes I can't ride. For a tall guy,for two or less,it 'ld be a fun ride,a nice addition.

just random info mid 80's to late 90's casati's were imported by RA Cycles down the street from me in Parkslope Brooklyn!

oh and more pictures are here:
www.believermedia.com/projects/casati/index.html

victory or triomphe gruppo?

that fork sure looks bent to me.

divineAndbright 05-09-07 08:03 AM

If the fork is not bent it looks like a pretty nice machine to me, its in very nice condition and an actual racing frame with all campy parts? The sellers gonna have a hard time selling it on ebay cause hes new.

The crank looks like Triomphe -- the spider has a curve to it as it approaches the chainwheel bolts.

Interesting info about R&A -- too bad they're such jerks now. They treat me fine, but they were exceptionally rude to my wife -- so they're on the no-go list.

YES they ARE ,I won't even go into it other than to say they make it difficult to buy something.

In general, if the fork is bent, is it safe to ride? Is replacing the fork the fix? Or would the head tube be damaged as well?

This fork looks ok to me. And it's generally not dangerous to ride on slightly bent or dented steel forks, unless there are cracks in metal.

still looks bent to me. but i've ridden plenty of bent forks in my day. :)

Hey guy's I am the person selling this bike. I listed it in San Fran on advise from my local bike shop here in Bakersfield because they said that I could probably sell it there. But obviously not, honestly I don't know much about bikes. I am just getting into it, this bike is way to big for me so I am selling it to buy a bike that does fit me. I acquired it from the original owner who barely road it. I asked the original owner if he took a spill that might have bent the forks since i was bombarded with the same question, and he said no, so..... Thats all I can go off of. Obviously you guys think this bike isnt worth much, I have no idea. I know that I am a brand new seller on ebay, but I guess I have no other choice, I just want to get a new bike.

Thanks

evwxxx 05-10-07 01:51 PM

Hey there Surfclimb. Folks on the forum here can be pretty hard on bikes listed for sale, or trade, or whatever. Don't take it personal or worry about it too much. Sometimes pics taken from the side and above or below the bike can give different illusions as to the straightness of forks. If you yourself are not sure, a quick trip to the local bike shop can resolve that issue one way or the other. As for your price, most stuff on ebay does not actually sell until the last 5 minutes, and then, usually the last 30 seconds as people try to outbid each other with no time left. So, the current price in no way reflects what you can expect to get for it. Now, one thing I will say is that items with "reserve" prices often atract less bidding interest than those with no reserve, and that is just a fact of life on ebay. Good luck

vpiuva 05-10-07 03:10 PM

Surfclimb, welcome to BikeForums. I loves me my Casati, but it's a little newer. Whatever you do buy, if it's vintage, so have to post pictures. Even if it's new, the guys on the Road Cycling subforum would want pics, too. And off course we'll razz you a little on it - we expect it back, too.

HEY TWO THINGS, you notice that this is an old post ? It was old before the eariest date you see. The bike you have there is an SL type Chromoly Columbus frame, the yellow bike's not, your's is worth quite a bit more, it may not FETCH more,it's way better,as long as it's in good shape. The bike that you show,as a complete bike may fetch over 4,some will disagree, lesser bikes have sold for more though.Casati overall
is not as well known as many other brands. It's not a second rate brand at all and is admired throughout Europe, has been raced successfully and is back in the US selling new models.
