Shimano/Simplex Retrofriction bar end shifters

I had some Shimano mounts left over after using the levers to make thumbshifters. Some Simplex Retrofrictions arrived in the mail from Kurt (cudak888) today, so I combined the parts and came up with this:

I plan to strip the paint off of the mounts, machine off the Shimano logos and polish them.
I think you could do the same thing with the mounts that Rivendell sells for about $25.

What's not to get? This is a cool idea. Simplex retrifrictions are the coolest downtube friction levers on the planet. Converting them to bar end shifters sounds like a slick, fun project. Let us know how they work out.

I like the idea, let us know how this hack works once on the bike!

Actually, I don't have a bike to put it on. I was just an idea that I've been kicking around for a long time. I've been waiting to find the shifters for a decent price and I finally made a trade with Kurt for a nos tricolor 600 FD. They should work fine. All of the parts are there and the cable lines up correctly with the tunnel in the mount. It's just like they're mounted on a downtube, only they're upside down. The tension screws are rusted, but they always are. I can't understand why they're not plated. I'll replace them with stainless.

Poquemahone:
The Phil ring, Miche BB cartridge hack does not work. The Miche cartridge is slightly too small in diameter.
An adapter could probably be made on a lathe but, if you have to pay somebody to make it, it would exceed the cost of a Phil BB and that makes no sense at all.

I have set of those bar-end pods from Rivendell, and finding levers that line up with the cable holes is indeed the challenge. I finally have a pair of generic-looking ones (or someone polished out the logo) from a frameset I flipped as a single speed that should work. Cool project, Dirtdrop.

I didn't mean to imply that it all fit together easily. It required some work with a Dremel and some drilling and tapping.
