What size bottom bracket?

1984 trek 520. The build is up but after 100 miles or so I've noticed a clunking noise that can only be coming from the bottom bracket. What size, threading, do I use if I want to do it myself? It has a triple up front.
Any ideas what is the best bottom bracket for the money?
thanks

Threading will be English. For size, just measure the spindle of what you have now. New Shimano sealed units are not at all expensive and come in a wide range of sizes.

Well I hate starting new threads so I try to post on one that's related. Here's my problem:

I took a crank and bottom bracket from an old Fuji to put on a Nishiki Mixte. Turns out that when I tried to put on the crank it was already touching the frame on the drive side before I tightened it down. Both are 68mm shell's so I knew that wasn't it. I believe that the spindle is too short (3L on spindle 115mm) on the drive side. So I'm thinking that I have to go to a longer spindle to correct the problem. BTW the crank is a SR Apex using a Sugino BB. Any comments?

Longer spindle or different crankset. I find that there's some variation in cranksets in terms of how deeply they sit on the spindle (or differences in taper, I guess). So I suppose that old Fuji had flattened stays to allow for narrower crank spindles.
