Hey T-Mar....if you get the chance can you give me all the specs from this serial: OE25999. Somewhat interested, I think it has Shimano "Light Action"? components. All I know it's a 12 speed. w/ quick release wheels, quick release brake calipers and that's about it. Any and all info about this bike (I think it's all stock) would be MUCH appreciated.

It was the 25,999th frame manufactured by Miyata during weeks 9-10 of 1986. That's it for the serial number.

Light Action suggests an upper, entry level model. Typically these originally sold for $250-$300 US. Please post an overall, drive side picture and a detail pic of the tubing info for confirmation.

I can try sometime in the next few days. I really don't use the camera much and can't figure out the settings to make it easy to read any print on bikes, cars, etc.

This one doesn't quite fit with the Miyata serial numbers I've collected. Please check to ensure you've transcribed the serial number correctly. M would indeed reperesent a 1984 Miyata build but the samples in my database indicate that the 2nd alpha character was not used until the 1985 model year. The confirmed 1984 model Miyata builds in my database use an M followed by six numerals. If it was a 1985 model, it shouldn't start with MA, as that would represent the first two weeks of 1984.

Hi, I have a Univega Nuovo Sport with a serial number MA26981. According to the method on Vintage Trek, the Dia-Compe brakes were made in November 1984. Perhaps they started using a second alpha character toward the end of 1984?

Sorry for the necro but here's another Univega with an M serial number that doesn't fit: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ion&p=10849906

Would be interested in knowing more about this if T-Mar is still around. :)

Bump for T-Mar. Got another Univega serial I need deciphering.

T-MAR! Wow, i have been enjoying my Univega ever since i found it racked in a relative's garage about a year ago. I use it daily when i'm at college and i get around Austin fairly well with it. The model name decal is mostly gone but i think it once read Maxima Uno? It's got original Shimano parts and Araya rims. Some of the decals read "Lawlee Design" and "MLT - Manalight Frame Tubes" and "High Tension Fork". Could i bother you for details on it? I would very much appreciate anything you can tell me about it and I'll love it to death whether it's a nice one or not haha. Here's the serial number: NK6399 and here's a picture http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...1234/photo.jpg

I have a Univega Rover-XCU that I have had since 1991, which I believe my parents had purchased for me new. I am unable to locate the serial number anywhere on the frame and I even took it into a bike shop where they looked even closer in the usual locations. Anyone have any idea where to locate the serial number?

orygundustin 08-28-11 05:54 PM

My turn! A Univega Nuovo Sport 12 speed, charcoal grey and MINT. Bought it from a nice lady who purchased it in southern california. She says she bought it around 1988 new for $240. I paid $25. Just trying to figure out the year.

Serial L228321

Thanks

old's'cool 08-28-11 08:28 PM

L indicates 1983 according to the accepted Miyata SN encoding.

This one has low miles. Check out the original Univega tires, saddle and water bottle. But a touring bike with one bottle boss set? The Chain stays are rather short too.
S/n K384033
I think it's an '83 judging from a number stamped on the seat post.

I just scored this Univega Specialissima and would love to know year and whatever else. I was told it's an 84, but the Sunshine Gyromasters are 80s. That said, it also has Mafac Racers, so it may be full of nonoriginal parts. Anyway, serial is J285966, flanked by F and A stickers.

Thanks for any and all help! Looove the ride.

J indicates 1981. This is the "sport touring" version of the Specialissima, before it got canti brakes and dual bottle cage bosses. It's a great bike!

I know, it's a rando! The geo is tres sweet. And thanks for the info; I finally figured it out yesterday once I started looking at Miyata numbers. Thanks!

Trying to find out more info about my recent Univega Gran Rally purchase from CL. I know nothing other than the Serial Number is J610710. It has two stickers with the letter F on either side of the serial number. It has almost the complete 600 set on it missing the rear deraileur. It's in rough shape but i plan to try to revive it.

bump

I have a late '90's Via de Oro, curious as to it's actual year - T97060034 (R928871068). It is is 7005 Aluminium. And it has a 1" headtube. It is destined to become a 29er of sorts. Thanks.

Ok, I have one I need help with. It's a Univega Super Ten, SN# 2C308404. The 0's actually look like backwards J's. The Diacompe brake levers say 05 82 which leads me to believe they are from May 1982. I have found some forums discussions about Univega #'s which would lead to the C=1974, which lead me to this forum. I will try to get some pics up to help soon. Can anyone help from this info?

I don't blieve Univega was even around in 1974. I think it was still Italvega back then. Regardless, that is not not a Miyata manufactured frame and while it's not a known serial number format all the common reverse engineering possibilities would point towards 1982 or 1983, with 1982 being the most likely candidate.

Just picked up this Nuovo Sport off CL. SN: M9L 89740
May be all original (except saddle and tires), but dunno.
Tange Cro-Mo tubing (no mention of double-butting), Shimano Exage Motion Biopace chainrings 52/40, derailers Exage 300EX, cogset 26/13, 14sp, shifters Shimano Light Action SL A400, Brakes Exage Motion (aero levers).

Any of the Miyata frame Univegas follow the Miyata Serial numbering scheme. First letter is the giveaway. After that, I assume the second alpha denotes when during the calendar year (although I havent figured that one out) and the number is the order of the bike that year.

A-1972 B-1973 C-1974 D-1975 E-1976 F-1977 G-1978 H-1979 I-1980 J-1981 K-1982 L-1983
M-1984 N-1985 O-1986 P-1987

Q-1988 R-1989 S-1990 T-1991 U-1992 V-1993 W-1994 X-1995 Y-1996 Z-1997

Thanks, mattie, but I don't think that serial-numbering scheme fits my Nuovo Sport, above.
I do have a 1984 Univega Supra Sport that fits the scheme, with a leading M and no spaces within the sn.
But the sn for NS begins M9L and has a space, followed by 89 (year, possibly?) and other digits.

Also, unless my NS has been completely re-rigged (which I doubt given its likely original paint job and hardly-ridden look), too many aspects are not 1984-ish: 7-sp cogset, aero brake levers (new to the Trek 400 in 1988), indexed shifting, 700c rims, and graphics.

I've been searching online for Univega catalogues, looking to find out at least the years when the unusual paint job was offered, but, for road bikes, I am only finding a few pics from scattered years. The search continues.

Back from the dead. @NJgreyhead -Did you ever get the info you were looking for on this bike? I just picked one up but in green and also starting with an M9L serial number.
Thanks

T-Mar pegged it as a 1990 model, made in 1989.
I sold it to a riding buddy when I first realized I had too many bikes. Nice color, in good shape. Handsome bike, but not light - a bit over 26 lbs without pedals.

2cam16 02-15-19 12:06 AM

@NJgreyhead-Thanks! Yeah I noticed the weight on this one when I put it on the stand. I got used to the weight of my Trek. lol
