Shot in the dark (ebay): Merckx 7-11

OK, this is my 1st thread in C&V and my 1st (but probably not last) foray into the realm of lugged steel, so please bear w/ me.

I saw this on ebay, wanted it and had the winning bid. Holy crap, what have I gotten myself into?! I especially like the chromed fork and stays ala the Bobke pic below. Best of all, I live in Colorado, so this bike will be running the same roads as the Coors Classic.

The Cronos may be a bit light for me (I'm @ 185lbs), so they may be replaced (but not sold). And w/ the exception of the saddle, all else will probably remain the same in the forseeable future.

I'm not sure if the stem is original or if this bike originally had downtube shifters --- last year of 7-11 racing was 1991.

More pics will be posted when this bike is in my greasy paws!

Great bike! I've always liked the 7-11 Merckx bikes. BTW, I don't think you will have troubles with those wheels.

Beautiful! I just picked up a 1990 Corsa SLX and love it. While I love my blue and white Merckx, I'm a bit jealous of your 7-11.

Very very nice.

Someone please dig up that thread about Merckx serial numbers, this would be an excellent addition. Reminds me I need to take some photos.

Please see History of 7-Eleven Road Bikes on my Blog... there's some stuff in there about original componentry.

7-Eleven became Team Motorola for the 1991 racing year.

that is one sweet ride.
not sure, but I think that 7-11 still used downtube
shifting.
Either way that is a very nice bike.

Thanks.

It'll get a good cleaning, lube, and new bar tape application upon arrival. It's supposedly been sitting for a while.

Hopefully my excitement isn't premature as I've yet to pay for it. Hopefully the transaction & shipping will go smoothly *crosses fingers*, as the seller will be calling me today w/ final price w/ shipping factored in. I spoke w/ her and it seems like it's the real deal *crosses fingers again*.

In the meantime life is good: it's 80 degrees and sunny and I'm off for a ride in about 10 mins.

They used both. Depends on the year and the rider. Merckx came on board for the 1989 squad. They were basiclly DT shifters that year although I do believe there was some testing of the new STI either late in that season or early the next season.

Even with STI on board some riders still opted for DT shifters. There are many pictures from the 1990 season I believe that show riders in the same shot with both setups.

Friggin sweet!

I was gonna ask how much you paid for it, but I decided to log on to eBay and just search the auction.

I did and I'm feeling sad now. Being jobless sucks balls.

You'll love it. I've had my Corsa 01 for about 4 years, 12,000 miles and it's my favorite bike. The 7/11 color scheme was one Merckx' best.
