Campagnolo rear hub and freewheel.

Hello,

My fuji's original rear hub has a 5 speed freewheel on it. I just bought new hubs (campagnolo english threads), the rear is 126.5 or 127mm, i'm not exactly sure. I've heard that a 6 or even 7 speed freewheel can fit on a rear hub of this size. is this true? Any suggestions with freewheel brands of the 7 speed variety? Thanks.

This is true. And a 5 speed would work too if you so choose.

Search ebay for 6 or 7sp freewheels. Harris Cyclery also stocks some nice ones. Shimano and SunRace and IRC still make freewheels. Slightly used SunTour, Shimano, Regina freewheels can be found on ebay. What size are you looking for?

Ditto above. Originally, Suntour came out with the Ultra-6 to fit in a standard 5 speed. I used Suntour Ultra-7 freewheels all the time on my 6 speed hubs. A 5-speed hub needed an extra washer or 2 on the freewheel side sometimes to fit the 7 speed freewheel.

Odd, my Legnano has a 5-speed freehub and that's ALL it will take. A 6-speed sticks out too far. Fujis are wider, then?

Fuji's are not necessarily wider, how the stays are terminated can make a difference, by 3 to 4 mm of effective useful width. Trek at one point with a number of there frames that used the Trek designed Investmet cast ends had even more room as the stay centerline was almost outboard of the dropout face.

On a 5-speed hub, you'd need an ULTRA-6 speed freewheel (narrow spacing), not a regular 6 speed. You could fit an ULTRA 7 on your 5 speed hub if you added a few washers on the freewheel side to essentially turn it into a 6 speed hub first.

So i've pretty well decided on a 7 speed ultra freewheel 13-28 tooth. i've found two styles of freewheel, notch, and spline, i thought at first that they weren't interchangable, but i just recently discovered otherwise.

am i right in thinking notch/spline freewheels are the same essentially, only splined freewheels are easier to remove after being installed, because of the spline design?

just want to clarify before i buy something.

also in the way of brands, what is higher quality sunrace, shimano, irc, sachs? thank you!
