Miyata 610 v. 1000
I've got a 610 and love it. I know the 1000 is a legend. Are there differences between the frames (geometry, steel type, etc.) or does it just come down to differences between the types of components used?

It all depends on the model year. Some years there would be different geometries, other years they would be the same. Generally, the main triangle material would be the same, with the 610 have lesser grades stays and/or forks, but there were exceptions. The 1000 frame might also have a few extra amenities (ie, a extra set of bottle bosses, interanl wiring harness, low-reider mounts, etc.) over a 600 series model of the same year. The bottom line is that you really have to compare them year by year.

That '86 you're looking at has a lighter frameset (STB tubes, CrMo fork) while yours is double butted CrMo, Hi-Ten. May also be a little less flexy. Upgraded components. But for what that thing will sell for, I think you'd be better off upgrading parts on yours (if you find the current components lacking). You can probably have a better bike overall than that 1000 with better performing modern components and wheels.
I've been watching for a vintage touring frameset or complete bike myself, but the prices are nuts, and the components don't thrill me. I intend to use it for actual touring, and modern wheelsets and components are far better than on many of these vintage tourers.

It's 1983 or 1984. I'd need to know the make and models of the major components to confirm which, but since the pic is taken from the non-drive side I can't identify the derailleurs or crankset,
As for major differences bewtween the 1983/1984 model 610 and a 1986 model 1000:
Miyata did not publish the 1986 model 1000 geometry, but based on the 1985 and 1987 versions the 1000 will have slacker angles, a longer wheelbase with longer chainstays.
Frame materials are a spline, triple butted CrMo main triangle on the 1000 versus double butted CrMo on the 610. The 1000 also has CrMo stays and splined, CrMo fork blades versus hi-tensile on the 610.
Extra frame amenities of the 1000 include an extra set of bottle bosses, internal wiring and low-rider mounts.
Major component differnences include 700C rims/tires and a 40 spoke rear wheel on the model 1000. All the differences add up to the model 1000 being 1.5 lbs lighter.

Thanks for the information. Very helpful. Seems like they're fundamentally different bikes. I do love my 610, and weight is no concern to me.
EDIT: JunkYard--the components on my 610 need a wholesale change (worn out/outdated), and I'm w/you in my perpetual search for a reasonably priced dedicated tourer. So I'm going to put some change into getting new components, maybe a new wheelset, and turn my 610 into a full on tourer. Still would love a 1000, though.
