Is that crank arm's length adjustable?

Not the LENGTH of the crank arm, but yes, the distance of the pedal shaft from the BB is adjustable. This was a common feature on the old bikes.

And yes! East Hill, I will take a camara on the next trip. I tried to borrow my daughter's this morning, but she claimed she needed it at school. I now know she wanted for after school at her girl friend's house--- for posting pictures on Face Book, most likely!

Copake Auction has posted the entire catalogue to their Antique Bicycle Sale on April 12 in Copake, NY. The Safety I found at the dump last summer can be seen here:

The beginning of the entire catalogue starts here---

I'm not certain if I'll go back for the auction. It was more than a 3 hour drive each way. If the bike only sells for $500-800, it's not worth spending the night in a hotel plus meals and gas. I'll just hope for the best. :)

cyclotoine 03-27-08 06:48 PM

Well some of their estimates seem quite low... on items that I can relate... for example only $600-800 for an alex singer? Yeah right...I'll take it!

WOW! I'm so very glad you rescued that wonderful bike!

Put in a low-ball absentee bid, you might get it. I think the crowd there does not get too excited about post war lightweights.

You can do that? Geeze I could totally ride it too, looks close to 62cm... what have you done! now you've gone and put "ideas" into my head.

Yeah, I just popped some low-balls down on some stuff I'll never get, but it don't cost nuttin' to try. Just read up onthe buyer's premiums and stuff to determine your bid. Also some shipping caveats there as well, which might work against you on a whole bike?

It's almost Friday! I'll definitely be attending the swap meet, but probably not the auction.

See you there! I'm at a ripe old age of 25, so I should be easy to pick out if there are only a bunch of old guys there ;)

The complete 2008 Copake bicycle auction catalog as a pdf file is on-line now at http://www.copakeauction.com/bicycle...lorcatalog.pdf.

Kevin,

I'd be there if I knew that pre-bidding had run the sale price up to near $1000. But with it being nearly an 8 hour round trip drive for me, the cost of gas, a motel, meals, and then whatever I might spend at the swap-meet and/or auction, well its more cost efficient for me to stay put and see where the bids fall on this, the best of all dump finds!

BTW, speaking of the dump, after a really tough winter of way too much snow (over 150"), I finally made a dump stop. Nothing there but an old twisted up low end Univega MTB. Let the spring cleaning begin!

Stan, thanks for the link to the PDF catalogue.

Is it too early to start placing dump orders yet?:D

Aaron:)

There's also an interesting Paris Sport - looks like a 55cm or so - from the early 70's w/Simplex and nice lugs that they only think will fetch b/w 100-200 - pretty much what they expect for a Schwinn Suburban! :D

edit: here's the link to the auction someone should jump on this, forged dropouts, half-chrome fork, cool color - I'd jump on it myself if I could spare the dough.

Great observation! There's a slot at the end of the crank! :D

USAZorro 04-13-08 06:59 PM

Well pastorbob. How'd you make out?

kendall 04-13-08 08:58 PM

I'm also curious to see how you made out! is an interesting bike to say the least.

Thanks to this thread, I've found a photo of one bike made by a company I'd been curious about for a few years but never found anything other than a passing remark, the 'grand rapids bicycle company' (as far as I know absolutely no relation to the current LBS of the same name) on front (?) street here in GR, worked with the company that owned the building, but had never seen a photo of one of the bikes. A photo of a bike I assume was made there ( http://www.metzbicyclemuseum.com/Bike20a.html ) I found because of this post, so I'd like to say thanks for that as well as the pics of your bike.

It's been something I was curious about for years, the building was not small in any way, two stories, and took up most of a city block, and had railroad spurs into it, so production HAD to be a fair size, but I had never seen one or even been able to find any real info on the company, And I live in GR!

Ken.

When my 9 year old was looking at bikes the other day I found out Trek/Gary Fisher now has cranks that have 2 holes in for size adjustment as the children get bigger. Check out the 2 holes in the crank arm.

I don't know. :( I've not received an email. And results are not posted on their web site yet. We will all have to be patient.

pastorbobnlnh 04-14-08 03:46 PM

Wooooo Hoooo! The best of the best dump finds brought $1400 at the Copake Auction on 4-12-08! I did much better then their estimate. Here's the link to the entire sale. The results are the numbers on the right side. My Safety is on page 7.

cyclotoine 04-14-08 03:51 PM

Congrats PB! That is great, it'll be restored and you can buy more campagnolo for your growing fleet of schwinns...

In other copake news, the singer I was on about went for $3,100!

reverborama 04-14-08 03:56 PM

Wow! Congrats, Bob! Those results are almost unbelievable. $850 for a bell! I hope the dreck I drag back from the thrift store never becomes valuable. I was collecting British motorcycles when people could barely give them away. Suddenly they became all valuable and it kind of spoiled it for me -- new people got involved that weren't in it for the love of riding the bikes, they were just "collectors" or "investors" and were constantly asking what things were worth. I always responded that I hoped prices went down so I could buy more. The looks on their faces were priceless. I've heard similar stories from friends that are into old model trains.

cudak888 04-14-08 03:58 PM

Congratulations!

P.S.: That's a nice lineup they have there - especially that Raleigh misbadged as a Clubman. Think I've seen it somewhere before too. Beauty.

East Hill 04-14-08 04:02 PM

How wonderful Pastor Bob! Not only is the bike going to have a new, appreciated life, but you actually made some money by rescuing it from a horrible fate.

Got to love those good endings!

East Hill

USAZorro 04-14-08 04:07 PM

Excellent! If only it had been one of those tricycles. They pulled in north of $10,000 each.
