Peugeot crank??
 

Dangit... Looks like I stripped the threads on my crank and need to replace it.
Can be expensive. It's vintage 1980-something. Are there a lot of variables
on this part? Willing to pay, of course... any leads greatly appreciated!

No, there arent alot of variables. Just about any 80's vintage crank should work. What brand crank did you ruin?

I have a crank that came off a mid-eighties Peugeot. I can send you a photo tonight. PM me if you are interested.

Which threads did you strip? Peugeot-branded cranks were generally made by Stronglight. Some Stronglights take a special puller with proprietary diameter and threads. ((WHY??!!))

Do you have French or English pedal threads?

my biking buddy will let me know. I'm sure it's French! Beyond that...
no telling. I've been told they're expensive tho.

Not sure what the pedal threads were... they were probably WRONG!
I had no idea there were different threads. I sure hope I haven't stripped
the other crank as well....

IME, the Peugeot badged Stronglight cranks take a standard 22mm puller. The ones branded "stronglight" on older Pugs usually take the Stronglight specific 23.35 puller.

My 83-84 Pug had a Nervar crankset. When the chainrings broke back in the '90's sometime in the days before eBay (at least before I knew about ebay anyway) the guy at the LBS just grabed a no-name right crank arm with chainrings out of a box-o-junk and bolted it on. Worked like a charm and there didn't seem to be any way to replace the danged Nervar chainrings. Weird French stuff. :D

my 83 P8 has the peugeot cranks, pedal threads are English and it would seem the dustcaps are 22mm. My chainrings seem fine, I'm just worried that I might break another chain if I don't pop in some new parts.

OK, looks like I'll be needing: a NERVAR crank, exactly 8" long.... where do I find such a thing?
I really stripped the interior threads on this crank by forcing in the WRONG kind of pedal...
I'm so ashamed. Had no idea... I still have the original Peugeot pedals, I think.

Can anybody help with this? Too expensive to go thru a bike shop.

Bon chance, mon ami. eBay is probably your best bet for another Nervar crank. Although as I mentioned earlier, many other crank arms will fit so unless you're concerned with originality... Or, they do make those helicoil inserts for stripped threads too. Many thanks to Sheldon Brown for clueing me in to the 14mm French vs. 9/16 thread thing. I had to go to several LBS's before I found a mechanic that knew what I was talking about. Oddly, he started saying something about a class C interference fit and that the recommended thing is to just rethread it by forcing in a standard 9/16 pedal. I stopped him before he got down that road and had him just use the taps to resize it. Worked just fine and I now have a set of Looks pedals on the old Bottecchia.

I was taking a nap. I have a peugeot mixtie that I am parting out,sorry east hill the frame is to bent to restore. The crank has the lion on it and all. Not sure of the year but I am guessing 1970's for no good reason. I know what its like trying to find the right peugeot and then set it up the way you like. If my 600 stuff fits the peugeot I'm working on I can deal on the mixtie crank.

Yeah mid 80's Peugeot would be a Nervar, unless it was a high end model. The length should be on the back side of the crank arm, they are on most bikes I've taken apart. Like 170, or 175, etc. Any 80's style two sprocket type should work, regardless of crank length. Doesn't necessarily "have" to be a Nervar.,,,,BD
