Thanks in advance.

My 1987 62cm "Standard" (Columbus SL/SP mx) frame weight is 5.1 pounds. The fork weighs 1.8 pounds. Frameset total=6.9 pounds.

By contrast, my 61cm lugged Waterford RS-22 (Reynolds 953) frame (without the fork) weighs 3.6 pounds.

That's interesting. My Raleigh Competition weighs in at 22 lbs. 14 oz. I would have thought the Paramount was a fair bit lighter.

Not typically. The straight-gauge tubing, when used, added a tad of extra weight. 27" wheeled examples would naturally be slightly heavier too.

The Paramount is much more about ride quality then weight, IMO.

My brother has a late eighties Paramount. 56cm size I believe. Frame, fork, and headset weigh around 6.25lbs.

That sounds about right.

The larger frames were made with a mix of Columbus SL and SP, while the smaller frames were made with SLX.

While the SL tubeset is the lightest of the three (1925g), SLX is only marginally heavier (1966g) but SP is significantly heavier (2215g). These weights are for complete, uncut tubesets.

An SLX frame the same size as an SL/SP frame will be lighter. I wouldn't be surprised if mrkenito's 53cm SLX frameset weighs around 5.9 pounds.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm restoring my frame and created a spread sheet for the weights of each part. Your feedback is very helpful.

Much thanks.

It's not just about the straight gauge vs. butted thing (I've owned a couple of 24-inch paramounts, BTW, and both had 531 decals indicating butted tubes). Paramounts had to conform to Schwinn's reputation for durability, exemplified by its famous lifetime guarantee. Paramounts were overbuilt as a result. Even double butted 531 comes in a range of wall thicknesses with the result that two frames both built with 531DB can vary in weight. More importantly, they vary in feel - i.e., a smaller frame built with heavier gauge 531 will feel "dead." That's the reputation Paramounts have in the smaller sizes - not so much that they're heavy, but that they lack the nice, lively feel steel can provide when it's combined with thoughtful design. In the case of Schwinn, they were more concerned with bikes lasting a long time than with ride quality. While a die-hard Paramount guy, I don't doubt that PX-10s ride nicer. especially in the smaller sizes.
Edit: (BTW, not trying to say Paramounts all ride lousy. My 24-inch P-10, just a tad big for me, had a wonderful ride quality, though it wasn't a zippy bike by any means).

Thanks in advance.

During that era the frames were shipped with a Stronglight A9 headset, so that weight would be frame, fork, and headset.

Typical steel frame weights of that era (SL, SLX) would be 4 to 4.5 lbs frame, about 1.5 lbs fork, and a few grams for the headset. 5.9 lbs is quite believable, and could even be a larger (56+) size.

Just an FYI...here's the link to my source about weight of the standard frame. It's the 1988 catalog.

enjoy!
